IHG One Rewards devalues redemptions at top hotels

IHG One Rewards has devalued redemptions at its leading hotels on peak nights.

This change won’t impact you if your ideal redemption is the Holiday Inn Express in Sheffield, but you will be hit if InterContinental Paris Le Grand was your goal.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

IHG One Rewards devaluation

IHG One Rewards has revenue based redemptions. In most cases, you will get around 0.4p per point based on the current hotel cash price.

However …. all hotels have a points cap. On peak nights, when cash prices are high, the cap kicks in and you can get well above 0.4p.

The caps at IHG’s leading brands seem to have increased sharply.

InterContinental Park Lane (image above), for example, was previously capped at 120,000 points per night. This meant that if the price went beyond (120,000 x 0.4p) £480, give or take, you were getting more than 0.4p per point.

Take a look at this:

IHG One Rewards devaluation

For the priciest night in July, the hotel costs a whopping 179,000 IHG One Rewards points.

Old timers will remember that it wasn’t too long ago (15 years?) that all InterContinental hotels were capped at 30,000 points per night.

The cash price on that night is £680. This works out at 0.38p per point which is about right.

Here’s InterContinental London Park Lane for the whole of July:

I couldn’t find a date higher than £680 / 179,000 points. However, the cap appears to be set at 250,000 points per night. Here’s Regent The Carlton Cannes in July:

You’ll see rooms at 250,000 points virtually every day. Cash rates are above £1,000, so the cap appears to have kicked in. You are now getting more than 0.4p per IHG One Rewards points.

Conclusion

Overnight, IHG One Rewards appears – to all intents and purposes – to have become a pure revenue based redemption scheme.

It always was, of course, for anyone staying at hotels outside super-peak dates, but it wasn’t too hard to get a better-than-average result. No longer.

The issue with what IHG has done is the same one that hurts Accor Live Limitless, which is also revenue based. For years the brands have been buying luxury chains because they incentivise people to stay in their cheaper hotels with the goal of an occasional luxury trip. The goal is now out of reach in many cases.

In general, we like IHG One Rewards as a loyalty programme. If you do ‘heads in beds’ then the Milestone Rewards you can earn (suite upgrades from 20 nights in a year, annual lounge pass from 40 nights) are great. It’s the points side of the programme which has been rapidly losing its appeal in recent years.

Long gone are the days of 5k/night Points Breaks…

    • Rob says:

I never booked one of those in all the years they ran though – very eclectic choices!

      • daveinitalia says:

I did – I had 2 weeks at the IC in Amman, a week in the IC in Athens and a week in the IC in Nairobi. I was Royal Ambassador back then as well so got nice suites (plus lounge access in AMM) for my small points outlay.

There used to be a few gems on the list in the early days, towards the end it was starting to be more HIX next to a motorway but in the early days it was fun.

        • zxydxdm says:

how’s IC amman. I am heading there next month

          • Toomanylogins says:

I was there a couple of years ago. It was lovely. Really good recognition as a diamond member and lovely staff.

          • Mohamed says:

Very nice property bit outdated, nice club lounge and very friendly staff, your status will be honoured and be young specially now that tourist are down with events in GAZA.

      • ankomonkey says:

Think I only managed a 15k one when they improved the range but added 10k/15k prices. I did make good use of Hilton hotels that had standard rewards at 5k, however. By the time you’d got the free breakfast for two, the room felt like it was free.

        • QFFlyer says:

Yes, and the points and cash prices were 2k+GBP 19, over 4p/point on a GBP 100 room for example (if you ignore the fact you’d be buying 3k points for 0.63p/p, essentially).

They were great for mattress runs (as was the Crowne Plaza NEC Birmingham around Christmas as I remember, 35 GBP per night, although there was a reason it was that cheap, absolutely nothing to do).

    • John says:

I only managed several Holiday Inn Expresses but pretty much all of them were in places I had already booked to go to and just rebooked my hotel for a fraction of what I had been willing to pay!

  • Alex W says:

I stopped using IHG when my credit card was cancelled.

    • Michael Jennings says:

Using the credit cards (I had both) with a Curve card in semi-weird ways during Covid got me Diamond status, which strategic use of Ambassador status allowed me to keep until the end of last year. That’s gone now, though, alas. I’ve got about 25,000 points left in my account. Probably good for a night at the Holiday Inn Express in Sheffield.

      • QFFlyer says:

Using the cards in lots of ways, even without Curve, got most of the HfP community Spire/Diamond for years 😂…

  • Rob H not Rob says:

We have two nights in the Regent Carlton Cannes ar the end of the month @ 62k a night. If the upgrade voucher gets us the old Sophia Loren Suite then it will be happy days.

The only other IHG redemtion planned is getting us 1.2p a point in the Caribbean so we’re hanging in there.

    • NorthernLass says:

Agreed, I save my points for the Caribbean sweet spots, 1.7p per point on my next booking!

Let us know how you get on with le Carlton.

      • Rob H not Rob says:

Booked Caribbean on your recommendation, that’s why I love this community.

We did the Carlton last April, probably in my top 5 hotels, has to go back this year.

The refurb is luxurious, staff excellent and status honoured at every turn. Off season rates hoover around 65k points if you book a long way out.

I know some cheap but super restaurants in Cannes after years of trade fairs which helps.

You really should give it a whirl.

    • Mohamed says:

Don’t expect any named celebrity suites, they will give you a rear view suite.

  • Thaliasilje says:

As long as the two-year diamond bug still exists, all is well.

  • Jeff says:

Maybe this is an IC and Regent thing, or a Europe thing? There are still the usual sweet spots at other brands which can get you >1p/point theoretical value.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

A couple of people have been spouting off about this on flyer talk but have refused to state the dates for these bookings.

The dates matter because it affects the cash cost and then the points cost. All it takes is for there to be a big event in the area and rates will go sly high.

Seems rather like when this got raised last year by a rather excitable US blogger and it turned out they were over egging normal dynamic pricing activity.

    • Ken says:

The point is that at the top end there was no ‘normal dynamic pricing’.

If cap has been removed (although IC Park Lane seems to have gone back to 120k) then it destroys aspirational reward stays.

I’ve bought IHG points in the past and got great value, but wouldn’t bother now.

      • QFFlyer says:

Agree, I’ve purchased on the basis that I can get exceptional value at higher end properties compared to cash prices, but I also won’t bother if that’s no longer achievable.

  • Richard says:

So I am guessing the 4 nights I had at the IC Wellington on the 5k pointsbreak promo many years ago isn’t going to happen again any time soon! 🙂

  • u07ch says:

Six Senses can go to at least 500k/night in Kyoto. Doesn’t have a calendar so hard to find the peak.

    • Tony J says:

Yes… But also at 160K which I managed to book for my partners 40th in March, coupled with a free ambassador extension got us 2 x massages plus breakfast and theoretically an upgraded room too. Was worth it just to see her face but also an exceptional hotel. The best either of us has had the pleasure of staying at. Highly recommend
