News in brief:

British Airways First Class deals for autumn

As per Luxury Flight Club, British Airways has launched some decent First Class flight deals to the US East Coast for autumn travel.

The fares are widely available from October onwards, but this still requires a significant degree of advance commitment.

The deals are only available to the East Coast, where the flights are so short that the premium for First Class isn’t necessarily there. There would historically have been some value in booking these fares for the tier points, but of course that is no longer a factor ….

Typical fares are, from Heathrow (Saturday night stay required):

  • New York / Newark – £2,310
  • Chicago – £2,509
  • Washington – £2,595
  • Boston – £2,623

Similar fares are available from Manchester with a connection in Heathrow. New York JFK fares are available for a small premium over Newark.

American Airlines services are available as an alternative to BA.

Here’s a Newark example at £2,368 return:

KLM launches flights to Barbados

Dutch airline KLM is relaunching flights to Bridgetown, Barbados, for Winter 2025. It previously served the route in 2021 and 2022.

From 26th October 2025 to 26th March 2026, flights will operate three times per week from Amsterdam Schiphol.

Departure dates are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. It will use a Boeing 787-9.

The flights will continue onwards from Bridgetown to Georgetown, Guyana.

The timings are decent although you may need to stay in Amsterdam on the way out. You COULD connect from the first flight of the day from selected airports including Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

The outbound leaves Amsterdam at 09.35, arriving in Barbados at 13.35. The return leaves Barbados at 15.05, landing in Amsterdam at 08.00, but you have an 80 minute stop in Guyana on the way home.

In theory these flights will become bookable with Virgin Points, although I couldn’t get the Virgin Atlantic website to recognise the route yesterday.

You can check out timings and pricings on the KLM website here.

‘Credit Card Reviews’ returns

A ‘no news’ Bank Holiday weekend is always a good time to start running updated versions of our ‘Credit Card Reviews’ series!

For new readers, once a year we take a deep dive into every ‘miles and points’ credit card (and now debit cards too) on the UK market, helping you decide what is best for your purse or wallet.

We go alphabetically so there is a raft of American Express products at first. We will primarily run the articles over weekends and the May public holidays, although they may pop up on slow news days during the week as well!

We kick off tomorrow with American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which still has an enhanced sign-up bonus of 30,000 Membership Rewards points until the end of May.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

There is also a more general BA sale – holidays and flight only – for the Bank Holiday weekend – book by midnight Tuesday.

Variable dates and destinations. Long and short haul.

  • Toby says:

I wouldn’t travel to the US even if BA were giving away the tickets during the country’s current administration!

    • John says:

I wouldn’t travel to the US under any administration

      • Russell G says:

Based on this and other comments you’ve made I’m not sure you travel anywhere, just sit at home getting enraged by the news and ironically commenting on travel forums! Although how you do this whilst boycotting all American, Chinese and Middle Eastern products is an impressive feat! ;-D

    • David says:

I went for two weeks last week and because of that I am now deceased. Writing this from the grave. Have a better day guys.

    • Danny says:

I wouldn’t go because if the horrendous costs involved… And the insane tipping culture

    • Andrew J says:

The exchange rate is better than it’s been in years though.

      • JDB says:

The exchange rate doesn’t really move the needle much, plus with so many other countries being tied to the dollar, one can benefit from the weaker dollar in more attractive and civilised places.

        • Dev says:

Wonder how many points you get for a stay at the CECOT centre in El Salvador?

    • Martin S says:

If you’re lucky they’ll throw in a free connecting flight to El Salvador too.

  • Paul says:

When are we getting the ‘long promised’ article into BA executive club alternatives please?

    • Rob says:

Next week was looking promising until I got invited to the Champions League Semi Final in Paris 🙂 It’s not one article, it’s going to be 5+, hence the issues over how we structure it and present it.

      • LittleNick says:

Really looking forward to the series. Is it possible to get additional airlines under the frequent flyer forum as well as just BA/VS? Like the other likely oneworld partners QR/IB/AY/RJ? Have suggested before in the forums but probably got missed

        • Rob says:

Potentially. We are REALLY fussy about addinge extra forums in which we don’t think would get used much, though ….

You end up with Qatar questions being posted in the BA bit because ‘I would have posted this in the Qatar forum but it has little traction so I thought I’d post it here [BA] instead.’

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

That’s one of the grating things about flyer talk

‘I’m going to Mongolia I know BA don’t fly there but has anyone been …”

And if people posted in the right forum then there will be more traction!

            As for HfP

Most of the time I’m not exercised about threads beign in what people might be in the ‘wrong’ place.

I use the ‘recent threads’ view so see everyting and only refer people to a particular sub fora to make looking a thread easier – ‘there was a thread about that on the AMex forum last week so have a look there …’

  • RC says:

BA first is really a club Plus product. Different league to ‘real’ F like AF, JAL, Swiss and Lufthansa. Pay peanuts and get..

Shouldn’t BA be riding a Halloween and then thanksgiving wave if demand then?
Hints that all is not well on forward bookings.
    Thanks but no thanks.
I’ll choose a competent clean punctual airline instead of that sham.

  • Throwawayname says:

Speaking of fare sales to the US, travel-dealz are showing some rock bottom EI business fares from the continent.

    • kevin86 says:

They need to offer rock bottom deals as demand for travel to America has dropped massively

      • Thegasman says:

Not really true in the opposite direction & as 95+% of people are booking a return journey it nets off. Americans will book AA preferentially & vice versa but with JBA it’s a wash.

        • Throwawayname says:

Not sure about that. I need to come back from GRU later in May and I am seeing UA opening up a decent amount of award availability in both classes about a week before departure. Given that I would need two intercontinental flights for the journey and that more than one combination is available in both classes most days, I suspect their load factors aren’t doing too well.

        • kevin86 says:

“Not really true in the opposite direction & as 95+% of people are booking a return journey it nets off”

I doubt it nets off unless you have any figures to back that up?

  • Paul says:

BA First – 2nd best business class in the sky. Qatar business exceed BA first in terms of food service and ambience.

Personally any of the Qatar business class iterations is perfectly acceptable.

    • Rob says:

Obviously. Whilst we didn’t write about it, Rhys and I had the Qatar caviar service on our way back from Doha last Friday. Laughable that you get this in business class when BA can’t do it in F.

    • Throwawayname says:

I’ve never flown BA F, but I highly doubt it’s as good as business class on EVA/CI/ANA. Lufthansa F certainly isn’t.

    • Alex G says:

IME, business class on Finnair and JAL is better than BA F.

  • Russell G says:

“the premium for First Class isn’t necessarily there” – err, have you flown LHR-JFK return? It’s the most premium route BA runs with Chelsea and CCR. If you’re not finding premium for first justified on this route, I can’t see which other route you’d find the premium justified (unless you are a) massively wide / tall and need the extra seat size or b) don’t drink champagne) 🙂

    • Rob says:

It’s six hours outbound, and on the return (unless on the day flight) most people get on the plane, immediately go to sleep and only wake up 40 minutes before landing.

Is that worth £1,000 over a Club World sale fare? Not convinced.

I’d probably pay £3,000 for a 12 hour First Class flight with night elements on both legs, but £2,000+ to NYC?

Frankly, having stuck my head into WTP when I last took a day flight to New York, I was questioning the value of Club World for such a day hop if I was sat next to a family member – although I am doing it next month in CW and that’s day flights both ways.

      • Russell G says:

Surely on night flights the lounges are even more important as you eat and drink in the lounges and then sleep on the flights like you say. In which case CCR / Chelsea access is nicer than for example Mexico city’s AA Admirals lounge + 12hr flight in F. I agree with your point about whether any F fare is worth the multi 1000s extra over J (especially if its vs Club Suite) is definitely debatable, but if anything the LHR-JFK route is where you are most likely to find that value due to the lounges.

      • john says:

But would you consider WTP on a longer day flight, e.g. to the west coast perhaps?

      • tontoro says:

I’m doing return to BOS on A380 both ways soon, with my two kids. WTP way out, CW back. Did originally have CW both ways as they were the only seats available, but swapped to WTP when it opened. Works nicely with three people in a group as can be in a block in upper deck both ways.

      • PH says:

Unfortunately in my experience now many people do NOT go straight to sleep but insist on clinking cutlery and glasses and loudly talking to crew and each other for 3 hours dinner service then resume again in 2 hours for breakfast….post-covid I try to avoid these red eyes wherever possible

        • Russell G says:

This used to be spot on my view, then I found noise cancelling ear buds, game changer on flights!

        • Alex G says:

Completely agree. My OH insists on having dinner on the plane, even if its a 22:00 departure. Even when we flew F to SIN and it was dine on demand, he did it. I ate alone about 8 hours into the flight after a reasonable amount of sleep.

Its worse at the back of the plane (I seem to vaguely remember), when you have to put your seat upright at midnight because the people behind you want dinner.

Of course, the civilised way to fly home from the US East Coast is on the early morning day flights. You lose a day, but you get home in time for a good night’s sleep in your own bed, and your body will thank you for it.

          • Rob says:

Yes, I’m coming back from NY on a day flight next month (3rd time) and I can’t see myself going back to the overnight ones. Starlink will be a gamechanger here and is probably why United is moving one of its overnight flights to a 2nd daytime one from October.

Coming back from Doha on the noon flight was also a dream last week. Felt 100% the following day, albeit time difference is modest of course.

          • PH says:

Hopefully BA will bring the EWR day flight back at some point. The catering tends to be pretty grim on these flights, I normally try to bring my own lunch. Had arguably better food in JetBlue economy morning departure to LHR than numerous occasions on BA where turkey ham and other revolting processed meats featured heavily…kosher meal may be the way to go

  • Chris says:

    RE: Barbados.

I cannot find availability on Virgin on the MAN-BGI flight beyond 19/March/2026. Could this be related to the KLM release?
