Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Win 500,000 Avios with Flora at Sainsbury’s!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you were an Avios collector when British Airways was a Tesco Clubcard partner, you’ll know that there were weird and wonderful ways of picking up points for buying obscure products.

The genius with the Clubcard scheme, especially Tesco Direct offers, was that the item you were buying often cost less than the value of the points. You effectively got the item for free, ready to ship off to eBay. Click here, for example, for a deal where £44 got you a colour printer with 6,100 Avios on top!

In the spirit of those weird days, and not necessarily because it’s worth bothering with, I introduce you to the great Sainsbury’s / Flora competition.

Flora Avios Sainsburys competition

Flora has, for some odd reason, donated 1.8 million Avios to fund a Sainsbury’s competition.

Two people will bag 500,000 Avios whilst 20 will pick up 40,000 points.

This is what you need to do:

  • Have your British Airways Club account linked to your Nectar account (you don’t need to have ever transferred points, just linked the accounts)
  • Buy any Flora-branded product at Sainsbury’s, online or in-store, by 13th May

It is limited to one entry per person, so there’s no need to buy a lifetime supply of Flora Buttery or whatever you prefer.

There are two interesting bits of small print which are not made clear upfront. If you don’t have a telephone number in your Nectar profile, you will lose your prize and it will be redrawn. If you do not answer the telephone call from Nectar to say that you have won, you will lose your prize after the 2nd attempt and it will be redrawn.

This seems a bit petty – 40,000 Avios is not exactly life-changing, assuming that the runners-up are subject to this rule as well as the two main winners – but the rules are the rules.

Full details should be under the ‘Partners’ section in your Nectar app. No registration is required and the competition is not targetted.

If flora had to buy those avios it would cost them £ 18,000 at a penny per avios so hardly an excessive amount (and they likely paid less than that)

They get lots of free media for themselves and extra custom for Sainsbury’s as well.

And definitely cheaper than their current TV advert!

A tub of Flora is more useful than Tesco Beef in Gravy, I suppose.

Those were the days. We filled a freezer several times over.

I so miss those days, I nearly got banned from Tesco for buying toiletries with the coupons and getting loads of points on stuff I really didn’t need. I got enough Tesco vouchers once to buy my son a car! Those Were The Days

I feel like Rob should interview you and run this as a retro story on Boxing Day or something 😀

I understand the competition organisers might want to select the winners and ‘get it over with’, but surely sending e-mails would accomplish the same goal? If the first winner doesn’t reply, move onto the second and they likely will. They might call 10 people and none pick up and they’ve agreed to wait and try a second time (how long between the two calls? Nobody knows), all of which takes time and coordination. E-mails are less grief for everyone involved and avoids people panicking about missing the all important call, during which time we end up picking up calls from 30 telemarketers and scam boiler rooms.

I’ve noticed that professional organisations no longer try and call as they know it’s largely useless and people don’t like it. They’ll e-mail or as a minimum send an sms. If they must call, they’ll foreworn to expect a call around X time from Y number precisely to head off the risk that people don’t accept calls from unknown numbers.

  • C2K77 says:

Yeahhhh. So I’m deaf. I wouldn’t bother adding a phone number to anything as I can’t use it for calls. I also sure as hell wouldn’t hear it. I do have accessibility settings to make my cell flash and vibrate but then I’d just hit one of 6 Auto response presets which are variations of: The person you are trying to contact is deaf. Please use an alternative method to contact them.

Agreeing with the pettiness, and whilst not petty enough myself to make an issue of it, I’m not sure said conditions would be the right side of the Law.
