British Airways lounge changes at Manchester Airport

Whilst we wait for British Airways to move across to Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport, lounge provision in Terminal 3 is expected to take a turn for the worse this week.

Rumours on Flyertalk and forums4airports claim that the Escape lounge in Terminal 3 will close for good on Monday evening.

From Tuesday, British Airways passengers will be sent to a temporary lounge space.

There is no confirmation of where this will be. One source says it will be ‘in the old BMI lounge’ whilst a (more likely) alternative source says that it will simply be a roped off area of seating in the departure area. It would gain a coffee machine and some biscuits, but no ‘proper’ food will be available.

(EDIT: It is the latter. You will be using a cordoned off area by Gate 37.)

We will see on Tuesday ….

The same sources seem confident that the Terminal 2 space which had been reserved for a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse will now be developed by Manchester Airports Group. It will become a dedicated airline lounge for British Airways, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Separately, it seems that the 1903 brand will be retired. The Terminal 2 lounge, which Rhys toured here, will apparently be turned into an extension of the Escape lounge. This is not surprising as the two lounges already share an overflow space which can become part of either lounge depending on capacity.

    BA had actually improved lounge provision in May of 2024, sliding back into part of what had been tgeir original lounge from the 1990s to the early 2000s.

    In March 2024, we were blown away by the Emirates lounge at Manchester Airport.

    T3 continues to deteriorate onto a facsimile of an overcrowded bus station.

    So as usual BA is unprepared, Kate, disorganised and is unable to work with others to avoid this mess.
    Why is the company so dysfunctional and ‘unable to play well with others’?

    I endured the Escape lounge the other day. Even on a weekday morning it was bouncing to loud music and all the tables were reserved for groups trying to get as p1ssed as possible. A voucher for the terminal would be a huge improvement.

    Manchester is just a hell hole. Every lounge is rammed with tangoed hens and huel drinking stags pouring as much booze down their guzzle at 7am before their easyJet flight. It’s a depressing experience.

      I was out in Manchester last Friday night with my daughter (The Village, Northern Quarter) and I found it quite entertaining. Kings Road / Fulham Road on a Friday night it certainly isn’t.

        Northern Quarter is great. Been a stomping ground for me and my mates for donkeys years since I started Uni in 1997. I’m less of a spring chicken than I used to be admittedly (46) but still enjoy a night out there, 2 of my mates DJ at several of the bars from time to time.

      But you can see it all at MAN. Several years ago I was in the holding pen for a flight to Prague. To my left were a couple of groups of hens wearing T-Shirts with highly suggestive comments, to my right two tall women (presumably) in burkas; from the angle of their heads apparently watching the hens very closely.

        Just after retrieving my luggage in a European airport, I noticed a woman in a niqab who appeared to have just arrived from Pakistan (I saw her holding a passport from that country). We both happened to be heading towards the attached train station and boarded the same train.

        In the process of sitting down, she removed the niqab and packed it away, revealing a head shaved on one side and the other side dyed in rainbow colours. She was wearing a large hooped earring and a “skimpy” dress which showed off several tattoos.

    As we live near Manchester it’s the most convenient airport but there are very few British Airways flights so not sure why they need a lounge, is it for the London commuter more than the tourist traveler?

      It’s because people won’t book MAN-LHR-BKK on BA if there is no BA lounge when they could book MAN-DXB-BKK on Emirates and get a Manchester lounge.

        If they’re intending to fly LHR-BKK on BA there’s a bigger problem than a lack of a lounge in MAN. If you’re giving examples it’s better to use a route that actually exists

    Why can’t someone at Manchester airport just state the approximate date of when the new lounge will be open, and what is actually taking place, it’s not rocket science?

      The space where the lounge currently is will not be a lounge in the future, they’re turning the upstairs into a bar area. When BA move out T3 will be the Ryanair terminal so no status passengers to worry about and the airport have decided that this space is more profitable as a bar than as lounges.

    the T2 development is a funny one. flew out of there last week. the loos has only 2 toilets/urinal’s . the depArture lounges seemed to be at capacity with no seats free.
    low ceilings and as ever in the north corners cut to save a few pence. airport is not a great advert for such a fast growing city and instead is mimicking its airlines ryanair and jet2 in customer treatment

          and really ought to be promoted more here… no one else has people helping you after passport control, telling you where you bags will be, with dedicated people then helping you with bags. Lightyears ahead of BA, but be careful with some of their wild pricing. They favour the Jet2Holiday bookings (obs).

          Quite comfortably the best airline in the UK atm. Good shout out Rob 🙂

            Correct, their core market is clearly now package tourists, often infrequent travelers who require help throughout the process and cluttering up such as security with their oversize toiletries, the lounges with noisy guzzling and the seats with their ample bottoms.
            Flight only prices are usually in my experience extortionate compared to EasyJet and Ryanair so I guess they are just using flight only sales to fill left over seats?

            EasyJet is going the same way on leisure routes – which is perfectly logical, why ‘waste’ a seat on flight only when a Holidays customer will add a £2,000 hotel which pays £400 commission with no capital outlay?

            The shift in the business model may end up creating opportunities for last minute flight-only bargains, in the same way that TUI premium economy can sometimes be a way of crossing the Atlantic in reasonable comfort without needing to spend a lot of money.

          Awesome airline at Jet2 and some great rates at high end hotels with often the ‘better’ rooms in the room category. Jet2 always fast in bag delivery. It’s a nice return home.

          Nothing worse than BA trashing the end of a holiday by waiting 1-2 hours for BA to be bothered to return bags – if you’re lucky.

          Jet2 always seem really fast with getting bags BACK to us. It’s very clear they work for their customers, (rather than viewing them as an inconvenience but necessary for profits – as it feels at BA).

          Agree – flew them to BCN for. LBA to avoid MAN. Although the constant “enjoy your holiday” when you are going on a miserable work trip starts to get annoying! 😂

          Great customer service always, staff always kind and chatty with my children, easily the best low cost airline. Use Jet2 all the time for family holidays.

          seat quality was awful on jet 2, the depth of the seat base is too short which means no leg support. knee room seemed better than other airlines but seats felt so much more narrow and uncomfortable

          maybe i had a bad run from Lanzarote as school hols and packed plane but air crew were the most disinterested and surly i’ve come across.
