Thank you to everyone who came to our summer party last Thursday evening.

Everyone had a lot of fun, despite the weather. We definitely set a new heat record for the event with the Met Office saying it was the hottest day of the year. Luckily a big stone church is exactly where you want to be on such a day, although it did warm up eventually!

This year the party was sponsored by Heathrow Express, who showcased their new Premier+ offering ahead of its official launch.

This will replace Business First, the current offering, and bundles fast track security at Heathrow as well as lounge access at both Paddington and Heathrow in your ticket. Premier+ will be available later this summer and you can expect a full article on it when it launches.

Heathrow Express’s sponsorship meant we could give you all two drinks vouchers instead of one! Everyone must have been thirsty because the upstairs bars were depleted by around 9pm.

The drinks system this year was much faster than previously and it only took a few minutes to be served at peak times, with a range of beer, wine, alcohol-free beer and soft drinks available.

The whole HfP team was there, and we even managed to get the five of us together for a group photo at the end. From left to right: Rhys, Katie, Sinead, Conny and Rob.

A big shout-out to everyone who helped, including Yuhao, Maxime, Matt, James, Max and Ashley who welcomed everyone on the door and ensured a smooth arrivals process. The catering staff also did a fabulous job of serving everyone speedily.

We had around 150 travel trade guests this year. By all accounts they enjoyed being grilled on travel and loyalty by you all!

We had representatives from American Airlines, Aspire, Bluechain, Cathay Pacific, Celebrity Cruises, China Airlines, Club Avolta, Club Med, Currensea, Dragonpass, easyJet, Ennismore / Disloyalty, Flying Blue, Heathrow Rewards, Heathrow Express, Hilton, Korean Air, Lloyds Bank, London City Airport, Malaysia Airlines, Marriott, Miles & More, No1 Lounges, Norse Atlantic, Park Hyatt London, Plaza Premium, Preferred Hotels, Priority Pass, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Trip.com, Turkish Airlines, Uber, United, Virgin Group, Virgin Red, Virgin Voyages and Virgin Wines so there were plenty of people to chat with.

Media guests included Cathy Adams from The Times, Simon Calder from The Independent and Claer Barrett from the Financial Times.

Claer wrote about the party in FT Weekend – see p12 of the main section from Saturday if you have a copy.

Barry Collins, our SAS Miles Millionaire, was also there:

Our new venue, Christ Church Spitalfields, was just the right size. The nave was comfortably full, with overflow space (and a cash bar for additional drinks) downstairs in the crypt.

There was also an outdoor terrace for any sun-seekers out there:

Our famous raffle!

We had around 550 people there but it never felt too crowded until we make everyone come back inside for the raffle at 8pm! This photo shows the scale of the event before we corralled everyone inside:

I had the pleasure of MCing for the night. Rob gave a short speech, as did Aoife from Heathrow Express and Tim from Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysia Airlines provided the star raffle prize of two business class tickets to Australia via Kuala Lumpur. We had 15 other prizes too – a full list is below and we are very grateful to all the companies who helped out.

This year we changed the format of the raffle. Instead of announcing the top prize first we wanted to keep the tension high. We drew the winner but immediately put their ticket in a gold envelope to be unsealed after all other prizes had been won!

Julian – who came up from Canterbury especially – was our big winner and was understandably thrilled! Here he is with Tim and Helen from Malaysia Airlines and Rob:

He told us: “I’m planning to go to Sydney, where I lived before moving to the UK. Thinking of heading out in November to see family and friends.”

Richard and Paul Carter, who you may recognise from the BBC, both won four Plaza Premium lounge passes each:

Other prizes included:

  • Plaza Premium: Four Plaza Premium lounge passes for use at Heathrow T2, T4 and T5, Gatwick North Terminal or Edinburgh (two winners)
  • American Express: Two Summer Garden tickets to Noah Kahan at American Express presents BST Hyde Park

After the raffle the staff brought out over 500 Heathrow Express-branded cupcakes – they were so popular that by the time I got round to having some they were all gone!

Things quietened down towards the end of the night, although there were still 100+ people there after our official closing time of 9pm. It was during this time that I managed to talk to a number of HfP comment section regulars including Cat and Polly, pictured here with Conny:

As always, a massive thank you to everyone who came along. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for you.

Thanks also to Heathrow Express, whose sponsorship meant we could have a party of this scale in the first place, and all our raffle prize suppliers, particularly Malaysia Airlines who went above and beyond.

See you next year – if we can find a date which doesn’t clash with the World Cup! If not it’s 2027 ….

  • Barrel for Scraping says:

We need to know more about this new Heathrow Express product. It does feel a bit like clutching at straws though. Do you really need lounge access for a train that runs every 15 minutes? Where will the lounges be located? I assume GWR one for Paddington but what about the Heathrow ends? I assume those who start in T4 won’t get lounge access. Will GGL / *G still get a free upgrade?

    • Andy says:

” Premier+ will be available later this summer and you can expect a full article on it when it launches.”

    • BBbetter says:

For some reason I read it as a lounge at heathrow airport and was excited. Need to get another coffee.

      • MilesOnPoint says:

It DOES include lounge access at Heathrow.

Premier+ tickets will include both access at the Paddington Lounge AND at Heathrow airport, included in the ticket price. Fast Track security is especially useful to non-status pax, as you cannot pay for this as a standalone service at Heathrow (unlike say Gatwick or Stansted).

It will be interesting to see where the price point is though and whether or not it represents good value for money.

        • BBbetter says:

I think the best value add would be to allow checkin at Paddington or at the least baggage drop off. Maybe start with some premium airlines like Qatar or Emirates.

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

            Not going to happen.

Logisics could just about work for T5 and T2/3 as HEX actually stops there but not T4 as it would mean having to transfer bags to a Lizzie Line train.

But that’s before you get into the security aspects and so on.

    • Marc says:

First I read “as well as lounge access at […] Heathrow” as a lounge for arriving passengers near the HEX platforms before you take the train into London. And I also wondered where that would be exactly located. On second thoughts, it probably means access to a third-party airside lounge for when you depart from Heathrow. Looking forward to the full article!

      • ChrisBCN says:

BA Flyer – you would actually chuck the bags out all at the same terminal, and send them through the usual transfer bag process, so it’s not an issue that the train doesn’t serve the terminal.

I do agree it won’t happen though due to security reasons.

  • Jimbo says:

No one from BA or Amex. Quelle surprise!
    Cowards.

    • PGR says:

Especially strange given the BA Exec Club changes were all “following customer feedback” – so they did what we wanted but don’t want to hear how wonderful it now is? *rolls eyes*

      • david says:

Or they can hang their hat on the “we did what customers wanted/asked for and we delivered with flying colours”.

      • r* says:

The last lot of BA employees probably still arent yet ready to venture out in public following the previous ‘customer feedback’ 😀

  • Petros says:

Had a great time at the event -s my third HfP party, and I really enjoyed it! One small thing: there were no soft drinks upstairs. Apparently they were available at the downstairs bar, but I only found out after the raffle. Still, it was lovely catching up with a good friend and finally meeting Matt (from Matt’s Planet) in person. Great job, Rob and team – until next time!

P.S. BA should be ashamed (not that they care). As someone rightly pointed out, what exactly were they afraid of? After all, these changes were made (checks notes) in response to customer feedback. Utter clowns.

    • Rhys says:

I had multiple soft drinks from upstairs before the raffle, albeit I only used the left hand bar.

      • Rob says:

I had a coke from the left hand bar fairly late on but that could be from the extra supply they got from Tesco!

We do, after 9 years of running events, know what % of people usually show up and how many drinks / what type are drunk. 32 degree heat and selling tickets very close to the day did knock these numbers out a bit though.

        • john says:

What is the alcohol / non-alcohol split?! 🙂

          • Rob says:

The thing is, no-one walks into a room out of 32 degree heat and says ‘give me a small glass of white wine’. Normally wine is the vast majority of what we serve and was the bulk of what we ordered.

  • JG says:

I did have a chat to not one but three Virgin representatives, who on finding out I used my own money to buy my flights made a hasty exit. I guess they decided there’s no money to be made from people like me…

  • Robert says:

I was surprised to see how many were offering tickets on the day of the event as they could no longer make it, maybe in future if I don’t get lucky at the time of sale I’ll turn up on the day.
Also, what is the relationship to the World Cup that causes conflict with HfP party?

    • Rob says:

You can’t turn up on the day without a ticket, but there are always a few people who can’t make it and resell via the forum. I don’t think more than 10 out of 450 were resold though.

If you think you can go out and sell sponsorship for an event which may clash with a major World Cup match, and then successfully sell tickets for such an event, we have a job for you. We’ll need proof that you have succesfully sold snow to eskimos in the past though. The World Cup will have over 100 matches next year in the new expanded format, with multiple games per day.

We had to abandon plans for a party last year due to Euro 24 and the unwilingness of anyone to put their hands in their pocket due to date clashes. On the very few Tue / Wed / Thu nights without a match last year, venues were impossible to get. And Euro 24 was a far smaller event in terms of matches that the World Cup.

The window to run events is VERY tight. Only Tue/Wed/Thu nights work since covid. Private schools in London finish this week and that’s basically game over for hosting anything if you want senior people to attend. Those without kids are sucked into Wimbledon from Monday and potentially Henley too.

      • Lumma says:

First world cup game is June 11th
        Theres no games on
        8th July
        12th July
        13th July
        16th July
        17th July
        Final is 19th July
        Those dates won’t change

        • Rob says:

Private schools finish 26th June 2026. That’s it. It’s all over in London after that until first Monday in September.

Let me put this in context for you. I have four business events to attend this week. Schools finish on Friday. I have ONE event in my diary (excluding invites to social events like Wimbledon) between next Monday and September.

          • Iain says:

The WC draw is in December 2025. Yes, there will be games every day from June 11th until 8 July but I’d be pretty sure if you avoid a clash with an England game you’ll get a venue, sponsors and attendees. Going by the attendees at these events, I think you’d still get a full house even if England were playing. But…it’s your party so your rules.

I did chuckle at your comment that it’s all over in London from 26 June until the first Monday in September. Do the high and mighty really shut down for a quarter of the year for summer hibernation. How odd.

          • Lumma says:

OK then. That leaves seven weekday evenings in June that are before the World Cup begins. The draw is in December when we will find out England’s group fixtures which would cover a maximum of 3 weekdays.

The knockout stages don’t start until “after the private schools finish”

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Iain companies don’t have unlimited marketting budgets

And they would rather spend that money on reaching far larger numbers than HfP could ever reach.

And its not that London shuts down duriing the summer (it clearly does not) but with lots of people taking holiday etc – whether it’s organisers or attendees – events are harder to organise.

          • Cat says:

Schools return from half term on Monday 1st June. That leaves…
            Tues 2nd
            Wed 3rd
            Thurs 4th
            Tues 9th
            Wed 10th
            …before the World Cup starts.
Would any of those dates work?

          • Rob says:

You’d need to ask potental sponsors, not us 🙂

Bigger issue is that the HfP awards will be back in January 2026 (two year cycle) and because we need sponsorship to make that work, it means getting the begging bowl out twice in five months.

Let’s see. I think we are all a bit drained after last week a) because it was a new venue, which meant starting from scratch on how to run it and b) the industry guest list was two years old and required a lot of work to freshen up. Both of those would not be an issue next year. Getting trade people to two events isn’t an issue because the awards are done at Director level (if we can get them) whilst the trade people at the party tend to be younger.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

    “Cowards”
    “Clowns”
    “Chicken”
    “Should be ashamed”

Just some of the comments about BA. Could be more I missed and probably others that were filtered out.

And that’s also not including comments made on earlier threads and articles about the party.

And people wonder why BA didn’t attend!

    • Nick says:

It’s really difficult for the tiny (and junior) team that remains at BA – everything big is owned by AGL now so events like these don’t really fall into their remit. Add to that the level of abuse they’d get for stuff beyond their control and you can see why they might not want to. BA could send a director or two but that’s also probably not the right vibe for the event given who else attends – it’s much more appropriate for AGL to send someone.

Maybe I’ll go one day, unofficially and undercover of course 🤣

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Until someone recognises you and does that Donald Sutherland ‘point and scream’ at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers to you!

    • Tocsin says:

If BA/ IAG had said ‘no, not coming thanks’ or ‘we’re getting our head around it’ then fine.

Saying ‘yes’, returning RSVPs and _THEN_ failing to turn up is cowardly.

  • Peggerz says:

Never mind the HfP soirée in that there London, I want to know how the fringe event went for those attending the Barony Bar in Edinburgh went? (We have a record of organising Fringe events since at least 1947) I saw notification too late but believe @ColinMacKinnon was there?

  • Jill Kinkell says:

See, @Cat and @Polly. I said you were HfP poster royalty! . Great to see everyone, but boy, was it hot.
No BA presence wasn’t really surprising as the BAC are well aware of how disgruntled we all feel over the changes.
I’m sure any comments, thoughts, or suggestions we might have proffered would go into a big black hole, but surely engaging on some level with a committed bunch of points/ loyalty folk/ geeks isn’t a bad thing.
BA have just made such a dogs dinner of the whole thing and complicated it beyond belief. All those different ways to collect avios and nTPs…The penny must be dropping since they gave us all 500 nTPs for our loyalty.
