Register for Radisson’s interesting but weak multi-brand promotion

Radisson Rewards has launched an interesting multi-brand hotel promotion for the summer. Click here to register.

Sadly, because Radisson points have been devalued so much, it is difficult to get excited about. The maximum reward you can earn is worth around £15 ….

However, when you look at it alongside other recent activity (the status match with Avanti West Coast, the status match with Club Avolta, the VIP partnership with Capital on Tap), you do get a feeling that someone at Radisson is at least trying – even if not necessarily succeeding.

Radisson multi-brand promotion

How does the Radisson multi-brand offer work?

Unfortunately Radisson has made it unnecessarily complicated AND has made the small print too short.

On the face of it, it’s simple.

Between now and 26th September, you will receive:

  • 6,000 points for staying at two different brands
  • 8,000 points for staying at three different brands
  • 10,000 points for staying at four different brands

You can register here.

There is no minimum stay required.

Here are the problems:

The bonuses are not cumulative

On the face of it, you might think that the total bonus you can earn is 24,000 points (6,000 + 8,000 + 10,000).

It isn’t. The bonus is capped at 10,000 points. This means, weirdly, that your first two brands earn you 3,000 points each but the third and fourth brands – which are harder to achieve – only earn an extra 2,000 points each.

Only new bookings count

Only bookings made after you register count. Existing bookings do not.

Ignore the part of the T&C which says ‘you must register prior to your stay’. This is contradicted later where it says that you must register before booking.

Radisson multi-brand promotion

There is no list of ‘brands’

The Radisson universe is a complex one. You have brands which are clearly separate – art’otel, Park Inn, Park Plaza, Country Inn & Suites.

However, you have brands which are sisters – Radisson, Radisson Blu, Radisson RED, Radisson Individuals.

It isn’t made clear if Radisson, Radisson Blu, Radisson RED and Radisson Individuals count as four brands or one brand.

They forgot to mention the Americas issue

Radisson properties the Americas are now owned by Choice Hotels and are not part of Radisson Rewards. The rules don’t remind you of that.

It’s simply not generous enough

We did a detailed analysis of Radisson Rewards points redemptions here.

Most redemptions get you 0.15p per point and it doesn’t seem possible to get beyond 0.22p.

Using 0.15p as the benchmark, the bonus works out at:

  • £9 of points for staying at two different brands
  • an extra £3 of points for staying at a third brand
  • an extra £3 of points for staying at a fourth brand

Try not to get too excited ….

Conclusion

I really want Radisson Rewards to be taken seriously again as a hotel loyalty scheme.

There are a few tiny shoots of hope, but promotions like this simply aren’t good enough. It’s not just customers who will be ambivalent either – it is hard to see why any hotel developer would want to put a Radisson brand above the door when the loyalty programme is now too weak to deliver customers.

That said, of course, if you are doing the stays between now and 26th September then you should register for the bonus.

Are you covering Virgin’s huge increase in surcharges on reward flights? being reported now…

    • Rob says:

US only but will get to it.

      • Throwawayname says:

As part of this, it looks like their website is actively blocking award ticket combinations with partner airlines (e.g. you can’t fly CDG-LHR-MIA even if both segments are available individually, connecting from Scandinavia on SK to VS transatlantic is priced at 365k miles in business class even if the segments are a lot cheaper when ticketed separately etc). Proper nasty stuff, actively trying to antagonise their own customers.

      • The Original Nick. says:

@ Rob, take a look at India too because I saw some very different surcharges that I’ve not seen before for flights I was looking at yesterday right out until Jan/Feb.

  • Barrel for Scraping says:

“It isn’t made clear if Radisson, Radisson Blu, Radisson RED and Radisson Individuals count as four brands or one brand.”

It’s obvious that they’re counted as separate brands! They’re listed on the website as separate brands. You’d not be asking if a Hilton Garden Inn was a different brand to Hilton or whether Holiday Inn is different brand to HIX.

Park Plaza and Park Inn come from the same group originally but you say they’re ’clearly’ separate.

You’re right though that it’s a rubbish promotion but it would have been beyond a joke if they didn’t count the Radisson brands as separate considering they make up most of the hotels that are in the scheme.

    • Rob says:

Your argument would make more sense if Global Hotel Alliance didn’t treat NH, NH Collection and nhow as one brand, not three.

      • Barrel for Scraping says:

That’s the Global Hotel Alliance and this is Radisson Rewards. Radisson’s own scheme is likely to recognise the differences in their own brands otherwise what is the point of this promotion?

        • Rob says:

Not disagreeing, just pointing out that their T&C are a shambles. Failing to mention that any hotels in the Americas will count is arguably a bigger ommission!

    • John says:

For IHG, Holiday inn and Holiday inn club Vacations count as one brand

  • Lumma says:

I don’t think it’s just the USA that’s not part of Radisson. Searching in South America brings up South Africa as the nearest hotels and there does seem to be a limited amount of Radisson hotels in South America

  • Terry Butcher says:

Goodness-this is so complicated and so Limited when wonders why they bother. I certainly shall not.

    • Paul says:

The Hyatt Brand Explorer programme is so much better. After staying at 5 different Hyatt brands, you get a free night. And free nights count towards the 5 stays! So at least in theory you can get a free night by having 5 free nights!

  • Terry says:

I’ve been so impressed with Radisson since the Avolta status match. Got quite a few stays coming up, but sadly already booked on non-refundable rates so can’t use this offer.

Paid rock bottom prices though, so not too worried. £160 for a weekend night in Paris,.£120 for a Friday night at Park Plaza Waterloo and £70 for a midweek at Heathrow. They have weird pricing, with the app sometimes (but not always) considerably cheaper than the website.

Wish I could find a way to retain my status on the cheap! Thank you Head for Points 😊.

    • MrHandBaggageOnly says:

I would register anyway. I’m quite sure in the past I’ve received points for a Radisson promo when I wasn’t expecting them. Takes about 15 seconds to sign up, so not much time lost if you don’t get the points.

  • Ben says:

I’ve done 36 nights this year at Radisson and managed to earn a grand total of £90 worth of points – not particularly aspirational! Though the discount booster and free breakfast are quite useful, and usually the upgrades aren’t bad.

    • Rob says:

To be fair, you get far more value by using Discount Booster and accepting reduced points earning.

What I don’t understand – since the points are effectively fixed value now – is why the Discount Booster deal is so generous given the points traded off.

  • Dace says:

Radisson used to be a decent loyalty programme. However, their overnight changes that decimated the value of their points means I won’t ever be able to trust them. This type of promo also sums them up imo, they just aren’t worth the time and effort.

    • Lumma says:

While some people got hit with the devaluation, getting free VIP (and wanting to retain it) has been brilliant for me and has made Radisson the first thing I search for when looking for accommodation. Free breakfast and good upgrades versus one drink and a handful of points with IHG Plat.

      • Dace says:

I have IHG Diamond AMB with Lounge Pass. Personally, I find the IHG programme the strongest overall as I normally do 60-70 nights a year. For that, I get free breakfast (and I would say half the hotels give me drinks and points as well), decent upgrades, lounge access, a suite upgrade voucher and £530 of food a beverage vouchers, which then gets topped up with the $20-€/£15 AMB credit per stay at an IC. That is also before the consistant 0.45 point value I can get and the Amex/TCB deals which means I get £75 and 9% cashback consistently.

I do know that a lot of people like Radisson VIP and I will probably give it a go at some point when I do not have a decent IHG property. However, I cannot see how the Radisson programme will match up to the IHG one. Although I appreciate that I have more stays than a typical person so Radisson is good if you’re going from a standing start and want a top status immediately owing to the status match.

  • Nick says:

Legally, if the T&C contradict themselves then the one in favour of the customer must prevail. So anyone registering after booking but before staying can get the points, as long as they’re willing to fight a bit.
