REGISTER NOW: IHG offering double points in September – but not to everyone

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG One Rewards has launched a new double points promotion.

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Express and Hotel Indigo amongst other brands.

The offer will only run for one month, for the whole of September.

IHG double points

It’s not ideal though:

  • it is a targeted offer (I could register, my wife could not)
  • you only get double points from your second stay during September

The upside is that it will double-up with IHG’s ‘triple points at five brands’ offer – details below.

You need to register for the ‘double points’ bonus here.

How does IHG’s new bonus points promotion work?

The offer runs from 1st September to 30th September.

You must register for this new offer in advance via this link.

The offer is NOT open to everyone. You need to see if your registration is accepted.

What will you earn?

You will earn DOUBLE BASE POINTS for every cash stay during the offer period, starting with your second stay.

(The bonus points do not count towards status, however.)

Existing bookings count so there is no need to rebook anything.

IHG offering triple points at five brands

What is the bonus worth?

The standard earning rate in IHG One Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (75p) excluding taxes.  I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 75p spent, ie just over 5.0%.

Double base points means that you would receive 20 points per US$1 (75p) spent, excluding taxes, which gives you a return of just over 10%.

You would also receive a status bonus on your base points:

  • 20% bonus for Silver Elite
  • 40% bonus for Gold Elite
  • 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
  • 100% bonus for Diamond Elite

A Platinum Elite member would therefore receive 26 points per $1 spent – 10 points x 2 plus an extra 6 points as the Platinum Elite bonus.

What is the OTHER offer worth triple points?

From 1st July to 30th September, IHG is offering TRIPLE BASE POINTS for every cash stay at these brands:

  • Garner Hotels
  • Crowne Plaza
  • voco
  • Vignette Collection
  • Candlewood Suites
IHG offering triple points at five brands

This is NOT a targeted offer and there is NOT a ‘only from your second stay’ rule.

Everyone can register and you will start earning triple points immediately.

You must register for the triple points offer here. Registration is now open.

Assuming these two offers combine for stays in September, you would – assuming you were on your second September stay – be earning 46 points per $1 as a Platinum Elite member.

This is from:

  • 10 base points
  • 20 bonus points from ‘triple points’, assuming you are staying at one of the five brands above
  • 10 bonus points from ‘double points’, assuming that you are targeted and that you have already done your first stay during September
  • 6 bonus points for being Platinum Elite

You need quite a few ducks in a row to be earning 46 points per $1, but if you can make it work you would be doing very nicely for yourself.

Conclusion

This new ‘double points’ is very restrictive:

  • you may not be targeted
  • the offer period only runs for the month of September
  • it only starts from your second stay during the offer period

You should register anyway, of course (if you can) and if you can double up with the ‘triple points’ offer during September you will do very well.

The page where you can attempt to register for the double points offer is here.

None of the links in this article work. On any of my browsers.

    • Rob says:

Works fine for everyone else – it will be your browswer security settings which are set too high.

      • Nige says:

It was definitely an error your end. All links working without me changing any settings.

  • TD says:

Just a minor comment on the copy. You first correctly state: “you only get double points from your ***second stay*** during September”, but later write: “You will earn DOUBLE BASE POINTS for ***every cash stay*** during the offer period.”

  • Dace says:

IHG coming out with some strong offers. I have a 8 day Iberostar stay in Sept. This will mean, 2x points plus 80k plus 15% TCB.

    • Rob says:

As long as you do a stay first to activate double points ….

      • MickyB says:

Or you could look to rebook it as a one-night stay followed by a seven-night stay

        • Rob says:

No, IHG would merge the two together.

          • MickyB says:

Ah, that’s a pain. Are they able to do that even if they are booked on different terms? Say, one flexible with a bonus points package, the other pre-paid?

          • Rob says:

It’s done at the back end by Rewards, irrespective of how the hotel submits the stays.

        • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Won’t work as IHG would treats the 2 bookings as s continuous stay.

A night in an airport hotel (or indeed anywhere else) before the longer stay would suffice to trigger the offer.

    • jannis says:

would be better if stacked with double elite nights

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

IHG rarely, if ever, does bonus elite (qualifying) nights.

Last time I know of one was early 2022.

This will stack with any other promos though

  • NorthernLass says:

Keep an eye on new IHG offers tracking. I had a recent stay via Emyr with the 342 offer featured a few weeks ago and now IHG are saying that it’s not eligible for points or night credits. I’m going to keep pushing with this as it’s a lot of points and also my suite upgrade certificate will depend on the 4 nights owed but it’s a complete pain having to chase it up!

    • MickyB says:

@NorthernLass are they saying it’s not eligible because it was booked with the 342?

      • Rob says:

Nonsense. At the very worst (which is how Ambassador free nights are treated) you get 2 nights credit but I’ve never seen this flagged before.

        • NorthernLass says:

This is the response I had:

“After reviewing your reservation, I found that it was booked under a discounted rate. Because of this, the stay was tagged as non-qualifying, which means it wasn’t eligible to earn points under the terms of the IHG One Rewards program. I understand it’s not always easy to keep track of these policies, and I truly appreciate your understanding.”

I hope it is nonsense, as you say, but it can be hard work pushing back against CS staff who’ve got the wrong end of the stick!

          • NorthernLass says:

And then they had the cheek to tell me I should have booked directly 😂

          • TGLoyalty says:

Is this the reply from the hotel or IHG CS?

Has the hotel confirmed it’s eligible to IHG sometimes I’ve found it’s better for them to contact CA and correct their misunderstanding

          • JDB says:

Well, it’s only ‘cheek’ to a direct booking denier!

Otherwise it’s good advice to ensure you get the lowest price and highest benefits plus points etc. although properties can discount prices so much, you don’t get points, but that’s a fair trade off.

          • NorthernLass says:

This was from IHG. The hotel has said basically it’s nothing to do with them at this point.
@JDB, this rate is an arrangement between IHG and Virtuoso, featured in a recent article on this site, so I do think it’s perverse for IHG to take exception to it in this instance. It can’t even be booked directly via IHG. As Rob says, IHG is mistaken here so I really don’t think there’s anything for you to take umbrage at!

          • JDB says:

@NL – I carefully avoided saying anything about your booking or points issue as I don’t know the correct answer. It’s the principle of direct booking (with the actual property) offering greater cash savings and better upgrades/benefits to which I was referring. You will find these free night offers aren’t exclusive to approved travel agents.

You probably will get your points but I hope you recognise how extraordinarily generous that is! The hotel is not only giving you a free night but also other benefits and paying an agent 15%+ commission, plus giving you points the hotel has to pay for. That’s even more than having your cake and eating it. Imagine what you would get if the owner didn’t have to pay the last two items…

I’m obviously well aware of Bon Vivant and its links to HfP

          • Ken says:

            @JDB

            Hardly extraordinarily generous.

Simple asking for what IHG tell agents that booking Destined rates qualify for. They explicitly tell agents that bookings qualify for points and night credits.

Rates are normally best flexible rate, offers time limited (although this time last 1 year) but will have blackout periods.

          • NorthernLass says:

Exactly – I only expect IHG to comply with their own terms, which is hardly outrageous.
9 times out of 10 I do book direct, but Emyr’s rates can be better than anything offered by the hotels so it would (or should!) just make sense to take these up when they appear.

          • JDB says:

@Ken is it actually correct to say that ALL ‘Destined’ bookings are automatically eligible for points? I don’t think that’s what the terms state and it seems unlikely given that some rates booked directly with IHG aren’t eligible, generally those offering the highest discounts.

          • Lady London says:

Pleàse keep going on this @NorthernLass. This kind of sleazy behaviour by hotel groups must not be allowed.

If you’d booked via an OTA they might have a point, but at this time in the business proper travel agents (eg Trailfinders) and the Luxury accredited sgents such as Emyr, snd corporate travel agents most definitely do book stays which are earnings-eligible except on extremely rare occasions when it would be pointed out upfront and you’d stay elsewhere.

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Personally I would ask Emyr to sort this out with IHG and report back once it’s done.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Must be specific to the 3-4-2 promo. I don’t recall any of my promos for points and/ or bonus nights ever not posting properly.

A CP stay last week had no problem with dealign with 3 separate points and nights promos

And my MAN HI stay last week posted 2 promos correctly.

  • Nick P says:

    @rob

Interestingly, I first clicked the targeted link and was rejected.

I remembered seeing a recent IHG promotion email ‘Earn up to 30000 points’ so registered for that.

I then thought, why not try and register for this promotion again … success.

  • Concerto says:

Can’t sign up either, it’s a dead button (whereas previous promotion sign-ups have offered a live button)

  • Novice says:

The link goes automatically to my App and there it says that the offer is not available any longer. This happens with all the links and I have a cash stay coming up. Do you suggest I try on laptop and will it apply to the cash booking if it goes through? I don’t think my amex has been charged yet for the booking.

    • Novice says:

My stay is in august so I have managed to land on the links but they are all for September.

    • Rob says:

This is a common issue – you need to try it on desktop when it will go the relevant web page. Weird they don’t let you do it via the app.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

On Tuesday I used the link in the app via my account and it registered me no problem.

On Monday when I first saw it the app link didn’t work but they must have sorted it out overnight,

  • ClubSmed says:

    QQ
Would a stay 31/08-01/09 be counted as the first stay in September?
