News in brief:

What is happening with the British Airways Glasgow lounge?

The British Airways lounge at Glasgow Airport suffered a serious flood on 6th August.

I assumed that the damage could be cleared up quickly but it seems that the process is going to take a while. It is even possible that BA decides to use the opportunity to bring forward some refurbishment work that had been planned for 2026.

If you are flying from Glasgow in the near future, this is lounge situation:

Both are acceptable alternatives, I think. You can double-check the current position via the oneworld alliance lounge directory here.

Mandarin Oriental launches a new American Express deal

The luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel group has launched another American Express cashback offer.

You will get £100 cashback when you spend £500+ by 21st November. Cumulative spend does NOT count, which is a change from when this offer last ran.

As usual you need to opt in, if targetted, via the Amex website before booking.

Participating properties are: Barcelona, Boston, Geneva, Hong Kong, London (x2), Luzern, Munich, New York, Paris, Chou-ku and Zurich.

If booking, get a quote from our hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas first. He can access additional benefits, for the same price as the Best Flexible Rate, as he is a Mandarin Oriental Fan Club appointed agent.

There is no booking fee when using Emyr and you pay at check-out as usual, which will trigger the cashback.

Excited, but then found out Santiago Mandarin Oriental not included.
    Has anyone been there?

My wife and I stayed in both the MO and Ritz Carlton in Santiago. We have to say that we enjoyed the ritz more in terms of location and the overall feel and quality of the hotel. That said, you won’t be disappointed with the MO either. The pool there looks lovely but is freezing cold making it almost unusable.

Haven’t stayed at the Santiago MO but I’m astounded if you say the RC has a better feel and quality than the MO as we found it really disappointing, save as you say the location is very convenient. It felt like a very typical example of a chain trying to do luxury but in reality a very thin veneer (and this a reality for all the awful cheap panelling everywhere) with very lacklustre service and rather miserable rooms and suites. Was also surprised to find Chilean wines in the RC far higher priced than in Argentina!

We shall try the MO next time but your comments are intriguing in that MO is a group that does now appear to be showing some slippage in the luxury pecking order which is disappointing to see. Not necessarily so bad, but off the peak of its game and being overtaken by others.

I didn’t like RC Santiago as much as I thought I would. Positives: rooms, reception staff Negatives: Free Breakfast tip obligatory, dinner food awful and staff in the restaurant rude.

MO – there is a reason why it’s cheaper than other MOs around the world. Same with MO Jakarta for example.

        • JDB says:

@meta – interesting! The cheapness applies to the MO Shanghai, another of their hotels which isn’t quite as it should be

MO Jakarta has bad memories for me as many moons ago I was propositioned there by an older male manager! Quite frightening at the time.

There’s been some chat about the Glasgow lounge situation on flyertalk. The upper deck isn’t great but it’s better than nothing.

  • Graham says:

There was 4 inches of water in the lounge so everything was destroyed.

The smell as you walk by is horrendous, everything will need ripped out.

The lounge situation is not great with Upper Deck. It’s at capacity most of the time but they did provide a £30 food and drink voucher last time I was there so good on them.

  • Barrel for Scraping says:

The Upperdeck lounge is so nice that they have to impose a 4 drink limit, which to be fair is one more than the new lounge in Leeds.

  • numpty says:

I always really liked the GLA lounge, small and perfectly formed! The Lomond Lounge is decent, used it last year when flying Biz with LH. The Upper Deck, not used that in a few years, and in no real rush to go back to it, if that’s my only option I think I would just go to one of the eateries and hang out there.

  • ClubSmed says:

“British Airways Silver cardholders are using the Upperdeck lounge at all times”
If I’m travelling after 6pm as a BA Gold, with someone who is BA Bronze, could I guest them into the Lomond Lounge?
I’m not in any rush to go to the Upper Deck Lounge…

    • Rich says:

Not according to the article, at 6pm you can’t even access the Lomond Lounge yourself as Gold. It couldn’t have been made clearer by Rob!

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

You’d have a job getting yourself into the Lomond because its website says it closes at 17.00!

      • ClubSmed says:

Sorry, that was a mistype on my side.
I meant before 6pm, not after. I wish I was able to edit my comments…

  • D says:

For BA Club Europe passengers when they go to the Upper Deck they get a piece of paper which allows 4 drinks only, and it gets ticked off for each drink.

Also, champagne is an extra cost.

    Not very premium tbh.

  • Yuff says:

Was looking at the Hong Kong MO, next June, and have asked Emyr if they can take a pre payment due to this offer
