I need to travel to Athens from the Sporades in June at the end of my trip, has anyone done the journey by sea and land and would recommend it at all. The land journey from Agios Konstantinos to Athens in the heat doesn’t sound good. Any thoughts appreciated. TIA.

I would not recommend the trip from the Athens airport to either Skyros or Skiathos, as it is with small planes and at not very reasonable prices, unless you cannot tolerate the drive and ferry/speed jet.

Which island out of the 4 are you planning to visit? It is worth looking into driving to Volos via the main motorway, which is a smoother ride than going through all the roads in Evoia, and spend some time in the local seaside meze restaurants with tsipouro. Then you can take the fast jet to Skiathos/Skopelos/Allonisos.

Also, if you are planning on taking a rental to the islands, I do not think any company permits this unless you request for permission (and most will decline)

I’ve done it. If air travel isn’t an option, then you’ll need to take a ferry from Skiathos to Volos. I think it’s a couple of hours, or less if it’s in high season. Then there’s a direct, but long, rail service to Athens. You mentioned Agios Konstantinos – that’s fine if you want to cut your land journey time and you have a car (but you’ll spend more time at sea getting down there). I also don’t recall a train station at Agios Konstantinos, so if you get there, you’d need to get a bus to Athens.

Hope this helps! I’d go for the ferry/train option again, unless you have a car in tow, in which case the second option will do fine. The drive from Agios Konstantinos to Athens isn’t that long…
