Re Melbourne, you can purchase a voucher at Beverly Rooftop (just make sure you go through their website).

So as not to miss the 150 squid credit last year, I did the cheapest possible test at 50 aussie dollars and it posted as the restaurant name on the Amex transaction and the Amex dining credit followed the next day. The website allows you to reload the card instead of getting a new one for further purchases. I made full use of the 150 and refreshed 100 pounds in this way which was 500 aussie (equated to just over 250 pounds in total given exchage rates and foreign transaction fees). I do not think Amex take into account the foreign transaction fee.

Cannot comment on the quality of the restaurant but it is located in an area of town worth visiting (Sth Yarra/Toorak/Chapel St) so at the risk of losing the 150 credit last year, I thought this was a decent solution.

Thanks everyone, this sounds like a good plan @flyingmisfit. Do you know how long the voucher is valid for?

I was hoping to use it for OTTO in Brisbane, but their gift cards are outsource to a different company, which seems to be common!
