Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Platinum Dining credit – Brisbane or Melbourne

Hello! Long shot, but has any ever bought vouchers for restaurants in either Brisbane or Melbourne and get reimbursed under the plat dining scheme?

I have no oversea travel before the 6 month cut off, and travelling to AUS later this year and I thought I try and cash in with a voucher!

    Thanks in advance

My very trusted relative loaded my Amex into google wallet.

Then went into the Meat & Wine Co in Adelaide and bought a voucher.

    There’s also a branch in Melbourne: https://themeatandwineco.com/locations/

I would be interested to know if this is possible as I am in the same situation as you and not visiting Australia until November.

While this has worked out for you, I really would be very wary of doing this even with a very trusted relative. I only raise this as you may have seen another thread today about someone having £20k of fraudulent transactions on their account which the provider wont refund in full, only offering 50% back.

If this happens, Amex or whichever provider will look into your account and although you will need to have confirmed to them that you haven’t shared the card in the way you have, it will take very little for Amex to work out that you have in fact allowed unauthorised use of your card and thus knowingly/deliberately breached the security of your card.

There are a three recent cases at the Ombudmsan where people have challenged Amex’s refusal to refund sizeable allegedly fraudulent transactions and because the card company is potentially on the hook for the money, the case description shows they went into the cardholder’s account in considerable detail and in each case Amex won.

As far as Amex is concerned, it unfortunately makes zero difference to them that you breached your own security with a trusted relative or a fraudster. I’m sure you think I’m being alarmist and indeed it would be quite unlucky if your account were fraudulently used in the next few months, but it is remarkable how often little seemingly harmless actions like this can spiral into something a bit scary.

I too raised a point about a week ago that I asked a family member to add my card to their Apple Wallet but it raised a fraud alert and Amex emailed and called me. So do be careful.

Re Melbourne, you can purchase a voucher at Beverly Rooftop (just make sure you go through their website).

So as not to miss the 150 squid credit last year, I did the cheapest possible test at 50 aussie dollars and it posted as the restaurant name on the Amex transaction and the Amex dining credit followed the next day. The website allows you to reload the card instead of getting a new one for further purchases. I made full use of the 150 and refreshed 100 pounds in this way which was 500 aussie (equated to just over 250 pounds in total given exchage rates and foreign transaction fees). I do not think Amex take into account the foreign transaction fee.

Cannot comment on the quality of the restaurant but it is located in an area of town worth visiting (Sth Yarra/Toorak/Chapel St) so at the risk of losing the 150 credit last year, I thought this was a decent solution.

Thanks everyone, this sounds like a good plan @flyingmisfit. Do you know how long the voucher is valid for?

I was hoping to use it for OTTO in Brisbane, but their gift cards are outsource to a different company, which seems to be common!
