Is the only option if you want to do LHR-LAX / JFKLHR with a BAPP 241 voucher to call BA and book over the phone?

Do you basically check availability for each leg separately on BA.com and then call with the detail? Thanks!

No – you can also book the outbound with the 241 then call and ask BA to add the inbound OR book the inbound separately if you have enough avios and ask BA for half the avios back.

    My understanding is:
    – You book one leg with the Voucher
    – You book the second one the same day or a week or two after
    – You call BA and they refund 1/2 the Avios from the second leg

    However:
    – Each flight will be on a different booking number (PNR)
    – Is this guaranteed to work?

How do you mean, work? Yes you will have 2 PNRs but this is not a problem – in fact it can be a benefit if for any reason you need to cancel one leg.

If you think your outbound seats will be taken before the inbound appear this is a better method than waiting and calling BA to book the entire trip.
