Forums Payment cards American Express £400 sign up bonus – refund option?

    Hope you can help..

We booked a fully refundable hotel room for one night, to make use of the £400 Platinum sign-up bonus for August next year in the US (expensive room but £400 mostly covered it!). It was something like £420 and whilst fully refundable, we opted for the “pay now” rate to trigger the £400 statement credit now. So £420 debited from the card, then £400 credited shortly afterwards.

BA contacted us today to inform that our inbound flight for this trip has been cancelled so we took the opportunity to move back our return date by one day and extend the holiday.

We would need to extend the Amex FH&R hotel stay from one night to two and happy to pay cash for the extra night, however under “manage my booking” for the FH&R hotel, I only have the option to “cancel reservation” rather than make any change.

I don’t want to trigger loss of the £400 statement credit sign-up bonus if I Cancel then re-book as separate transactions. T&Cs here but not really clear where I stand?

Of course happy if the £420 is credited back to me and then the £400 shows up back as pending Amex travel credit (for me to then apply to a two-night stay instead one one) but didn’t want to risk losing out.

Any ideas? Hope you can help. Perhaps a call or chat to Amex to add on the one night?

    Thank you!!

Can’t you just book the extra night separately?

Thanks – yes definitely – I didn’t want to risk us being asked to check-out after night 1 (if you see what I mean) as I’ve never done this before!

Also don’t want to book another one-nighter and benefit from the FH&R £100 credit per stay / late check-out etc bens, as genuinely not trying to game the system by booking one-nighters (where FH&R bens are on a per-stay basis). Hope that’s clear!

You’re overthinking this – just book the extra night. I often book 2/3 nighters as individual bookings – greater flexibility. Just tell them you have back to back bookings when you check in. It’ll be fine.

I agree. The easiest and safer option is to just book the extra night. Especially with the extra £100 benefit, why not!
Regarding your original question – I struggled with the same issue when booking a flight using the credit in Aug. I tried to get clarity from a number of Amex reps, but nobody could give me a definitive answer. Tried on HfP too but did not get a clear answer.
I had, although, come across a few online posts from Amex Australia(?) where people had reported receiving the full refund (£420 in your case) and the credits not being reversed. So in your case, that’ll mean you get back £420 and that’s it. So you end up with +£400 net.
But that was an old and non-UK post, so rely on it at your own risk.

Especially with the extra £100 benefit,

This is against the FHR terms…

“Back-to-back stays booked by a single Cardmember, Cardmembers staying in the same room or Cardmembers traveling in the same party within a 24-hour period at the same property are considered one stay and are ineligible for additional FHR benefits (“Prohibited Action”). American Express and the property reserve the right to modify or revoke FHR benefits at any time without notice if we or they determine, in our or their sole discretion, that you may have engaged in a Prohibited Action, or have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with your FHR benefits.”

So you probably want to contact the hotel and explain you don’t expect two sets of credits. Or maybe see if there’s a cheaper option than FHR for the second night. Again if you contact the hotel they’ll likely want to keep you in the same room as it’s less cleaning.
