Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club 5 tier points from Bronze – reset November

  • 1 post

Hi there, I hope someone might know what my options are with tier points. I’ve got 295 and my year resets on November 8th. I’ve been doing some research and I apparently can’t buy tier points or exchange avios for them. Is my only option to book a flight and also do you get the tier points whether you take the flight or not or do you only get them if you do fly?

It seems silly but I’m wondering if I should fly somewhere and get 5 tier points. I’m assuming for that many any flight would do? I’ve been trying to get through to British airways all day but they’re always too busy to take calls so I thought I’d join a forum and see if anyone might be kind enough to advise on my options.

Your research is correct – BA Tier Points can only be earned by flying. If you value reaching Bronze status, and only need 5 points, then any basic economy flight one way will get you this. You can look at the ‘Find our cheapest flights’ menu option on Ba.com to see what your options are – maybe a day trip to somewhere you would actually like to go, or a one way to somewhere in the UKand come back by train…….depends what would work best for you.

You don’t say where you’re based but as above, any domestic UK flight in economy will get you 5 TPs. Prices should be quite reasonable in October and early November, depending on which service you use (MAN-LHR, for example can literally be £45 or £300 depending on the time of day!) If you’re just going for the TPs, it’s easier to stay in the UK with no immigration or other issues to factor in. Depending on when/where you go, flying back may be cheaper than the train!

What’s the benefits difference between blue and bronze? Is it worth it?

I wouldn’t make a particular effort to get Bronze but if OP is only 5 TPs off anyway it’s worth it for priority check-in and boarding, and free seat selection 7 days before travel.

I was 5TP short for silver once and had an international reward flight coming up in CW for which I wanted to secure a good seat, so I booked a £57 return ticket to Dublin and spent a morning there walking around.

I think I would also do it for Bronze, as for seat selection 7 days out and priority boarding can still be more valuable than the £50-60 outlay (especially if often travelling with family)
