Hello,
I am looking to book return flights in the summer for the family.
I have a 2×1 Economy voucher. The problem is at the moment there is only availability for my chosen dates on the inbound, but not the outbound. In my experience of this route however seats do free up closer to the date. I have questions:
– If I book the inbound now, and then the outbound using the 2×1 if/once it’s available, will BA still link the bookings and refund me 50% of the Avios? I appreciate it’s more common to do if you book outbound first and inbound later, but wondering if it works in the reverse?
– If I decide to cancel the inbound booking (because no outbound availability appears), what will the cancellation fee be? I remember reading reports that BA was only charging 50p per ticket – even if you don’t book the max Avios/50p option – but wondering if it’s still the case?
Thank you!
You can’t book the inbound before the outbound.
Summer flights can get booked up really quickly so you may have left it a bit late for your destination.
If you really want to use your voucher I’d suggest picking somewhere there’s availability on both dates and book the whole thing to make it simpler.
Thank you though unfortunately changing destination not an option as we are visiting family. I would love to book as early as possible but having to coordinate dates with relatives unfortunately makes that pretty tricky.
Does anyone have latest info on the 50p cancellation cost? Is that still working?
I was trying to cancel a fee IB flights and was being quoted £35 online
Sorry, forgot to add – I did cancel a BA booking for 50p a few weeks ago, it’s definitely still working on some bookings.
Which airport are you going to? Is it one where you could mix and match with an LCC on the outbound? You’d then still have the other half of your 241 to use for the following 12 months.
Cancelled a booking last night (booked 4 December) for 50p.
Thank you – the airport is BRI, I’ve booked 4 tickets for the inbound on the old RFS tariff of £17.50 pp in taxes so worst case scenario I lose £70. But sounds like the 50p cancellation option is working anyway.
It’s only an economy 2×1 voucher so if I am not able to use it it’s not the end of the world. Flights get very expensive in the summer. I’ve got SeatSpy tracking flights to BRI and BDS so hopefully something will open up in the coming months – it did last year.
Assuming I manage, I will then try to get BA to combine the bookings and see if they will refund the Avios. Might not work but it’s not a huge number of Avios anyway as it’s economy.
BA will not combine the bookings. It’s just not possible.
Even when people book trips the right way around whilst BA will refund the avios the bookings remain separate unless the booking is made at the same time.

Also price track with Skyscanner and Google as NL said for LCCs. For the specific day you want.

Sorry to jump in, but would the other half of the 241 be usable like this?
LHR-HKG BA JAN 2024
NYC-MAD IB DEC 2024
TIA
That’s not a valid open jaw routing unfortunately, as the distance between HKG and NYC is longer than LON-HKG and NYC-MAD
Unless you specifically want to be in Madrid, the best option getting back from NYC is in economy on the (very short) BA day flight for 25k avios plus £50!

Thanks and @NorthernLass I will screenshot this as I get most things but this always gives me trouble.
