Forums Payment cards American Express 8000 referral bonus for BA Amex

Hi, my offer email inviting me to refer a friend says “They will not be eligible for any welcome bonus offer if they hold or have held any personal British Airways American Express Card product in the past 24 months.”

My husband has an Amex Gold, can I refer him and get the 8000 bonus (and he gets the 12000 bonus if he meets the £1K spend threshold)? Seems inconsistent with regular applications of the card, but just checking if anyone has tried it? Thanks

The email is wrong and I suspect Amex sent you the wrong version. You would get the 8k but he won’t get the 12k.

My friend had the blue ba card. I sent her a link for the BAPP which she followed and got the card. She knew she would not get the SUB but I thought I would get the referral bonus. AE on the chat said I am not entitled as she has had an AE card for 3 years even though it was a different card. Is this correct?

You can’t hold both BA Amexes, so her application would have been treated as an upgrade, which is presumably why you haven’t had the referral bonus.

Yeah suspect it’s due to upgrade they would’ve needed to cancel the free BA and reapply for the BAPP later for you to get the referral.

You would’ve got it if they picked any other eligible card.

    Thanks. That explained it

I am holding BAPP and can see referral bonus of 12k until 2nd July. My friend is holding Amex Cashback card, and is planning to take BA (free) card. Will I get bonus if he takes it through my referral? I know that for normal Amex cards he is not new cardholder but not sure about the BA ones.
