I’ve just found the ‘Use Avios on AA flights’ article from 5 years ago .
It refers to AA points, are they the same as Avios?
Thanks. No, but you can use Avios on AA. They are different schemes and different currencies.
But you book AA flights on BA.com using Avios. Is this what you’re after?
Apples and Bananas. Don’t expect every flight you see available on aa.com to be available on ba.com. They only list the lowest AA points level and only non-stop, not connecting flights.
There are multiple threads on here where this has been discussed at length.
And also when you book an AA flight via any method, don’t actually expect that flight to take place. AA are appallingly bad at cancelling routes, rescheduling for 9 hours later or even 9 hour prior etc.
@davefl, I was looking at alternative routes home from GCM recently and saw GCM-CLT-JFK available to book on one ticket with avios.
They are really bad for schedule changes though, you can’t assume that anything you book is going to depart near the time on your original booking!!

Oh goodness me yes. I’ve had 3 trips severely affected by AA connecting flights moving too early to connect from an inbound transatlantic flight. Once they did it 3 times on the same trip. I managed to change the flight to different regional airports the first two times but on change three, I was forced to cancel the whole trip.
Speaking of AA, is baggage allowance a OneWorld benefit at time of booking or time of flight? Seat selection is obviously a time of booking benefit and lounge entry time of flight. Just thinking about when I lose my BA Silver status.
Thanks for the input…I need to book 3/4 internal flights and will now give it a go…on line.
@masaccio, IME it’s status at check-in, on short-haul US departures anyway. You check your bags, either via a machine or a human, and you’re either charged or not depending on what your status shows at that point.
If you drop to Bronze, however, you still get one checked bag (and possibly other members of your party do as well?)
If that’s how it works for our big trip this year, maybe we go with 1 checked bag and a carry on each just in case. Will be a bit of a squeeze with scuba and QM2 glad rags mind.

The seat selection benefit is at the time of booking unless there’s an equipment change or your seats are moved by BA upon automatic or manual review. You need status at the time of any such changes to reinstate seat allocations.
Actually looking at BAEC, my Silver status is apparently until the end of 2025 despite my TP year ending in March. I guess that’s the collection year realignment thing that I never did understand.
Where are you diving, @masaccio? We are off to Bimini next week so OH can tick the hammerheads off his scuba bucket list!

Hammerheads sound amazing. We’re finishing a month-long retirement trip in Grenada where the diving is pretty good and certainly varied. It’s a fave location for OH to sit on a beach drinking rum while I dive.
My in-laws learned to dive at La Source in Grenada and liked it very much.
We’re doing a 3-week semi-retirement trip taking in Florida, Bimini and then onto GCM for our annual visit. Much diving will be done by OH and much sitting on the beach by me! Rum drinking by both, lol.
Hope you have an amazing time, keep us posted on the good/bad/funny!
My experience of AA this week was inconsistent with the above but I’m putting it down to winning the AA lottery.
We have no status with either BA or AA but booked an Avios economy redemption via BA many months ago and was able to select seats at no cost at the time.
I was expecting to pay to check bags but when checking in on the app it wouldn’t let me. Tried again using the self-service machine at the airport and again computer said no. Ended up having to go to the desk but wasn’t charged anything so all good.
The Centurion lounge at DCA wasn’t bad either.
We’re on AA MIA-GCM mid-trip, so hoping for Flagship lounge and lots of free bags. Work the Gold status for as long as it lasts 😂
The Centurion lounge at DCA wasn’t bad either.
Flying from DCA a couple of times this year but Centurion is $ for guests if I have Amex Plat right?
The standard AA lounge isn’t that bad. I was allowed to guest OH and teenager in, and there was a small breakfast buffet plus a chef making variations on avocado toast! We were about the only people in there at 6 am (because AA had moved our flight 4 hours earlier, of course!)

That rule change was for US cardholders. A UK-issued Plat allows entry for up to 3 people (cardholder + 2 guests).

Splendid thanks. The AA lounges look rather mediocre.
I just showed them my Plat card and we both got in fine.
Can anyone help with booking an avios reward flight on AA.com through BA.com
It was not a problem last year but this year I get no availability on any route I select have tried domestic and international tried different dates all state no availability rang BA twice neither agent had any idea what was going on have AA dramatically reduced Avios award flights I also tried cash to check the system and no availability I tried AA and the flights were available with lots of award availability forAA customers
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
