Fair point. I suppose it perhaps depends on where you place the thresholds, how much spend is required for each status tier. Obviously you don’t want it so that *only* the highest spenders get top tier (not least because, as Rob says in the article, in many cases that would be rewarding the wrong people). But you would want to find a balance that perhaps fairly easily rewards with mid-tier status those who fly often but on cheaper fares but who control their own budgets and decisions, but then incentivises them to push that little further for top-tier. (My thinking being that the cohort of flyers on big corporate deals involving high-price tickets, albeit perhaps with big year-end rebates, are likely to end up Gold anyway, so they can be taken as read – it’s the next cohort down that needs to be shown the love etc). Tier points on the value of reward flights, perhaps? Meanwhile if the miles earning remain good then even the only-occasionally long-haul traveller gets something useful to reward them for their custom, even when going for status isn’t on the radar.
I fly from MAN to LHR quite often, I usually only get 750 Avios per flight (1500 return). But this change will be excellent (for me) as I’ll earn a lot more points.
For example, cheapest club europe return is on average £320 which would be 2,240 avois on the new structure (49% increase).
If I went for the more convenient timed flights the return price for club europe can be £600, which would mean 4,200 Avios (180% increase).
So it certainly works out better for the short haul flights. This is based on Bronze membership (7 points for every £1).
You won’t be getting 7 x £ 320 avios – unless you’ve always stripped out the APD and airport fees from the cost of the flight,
Avios earning will be based on the base fare plus any BA surcharges and not the total cost of the flight.
