Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Advice on Avios Balance Boost

  • Danny68 1 post

    Hi,

I’m new to collecting AVIOS and we have just got our 50K bonus points with the BA Mastercard. I see that there is a new scheme to triple your points earned in the last 3o days on top of which there is also a 10% bonus.

For me if we go for the triple option it will cost £1524.41 and I would get 182,226 Avios + points earned on the purchase on my credit card.

    Is this worth doing?

    Thanks for any advice.

You need to have a definitely cashout route that you know will get your more value for your avios than you are paying here. If you have that in the short term (say 6-12 months), then go for it. If not, then think carefully.

BA could devalue the avios scheme at any point. They might not for 4 years. They might do it before xmas, who knows.

Remember, cash is more flexible than avios, so saving more cash than you are paying makes this with while, otherwise quite possibly not.

The other factor of course is how many avios do you need to make any redemption you want to make. If this helps you reach that then you can be more flexible on what you are paying.

Read the main thread on here and note both the popularity and high take up of the offer by more experienced Avios collectors, but also the sensible caveats expressed.

Make a decision that works best for your circumstances and expected travel plans, but do so before the 30 day rolling horizon that will gradually eliminate your Avios transactions eligible for boost.

Also note that after end July, if the temporary 10% uplift isn’t extended, then this offer moves from “rare opportunity to buy Avios at the price” to “similar opportunity comes along every so often to buy Avios at the price”.

I’m in the same boat, and I’ll be jumping all over this when my 50K points post in early July.

Your 182k is 2 UK-DXB J returns for example. Plus taxes, but still great value (assuming you can find seats!!)

I boosted the 50K from barclays. As someone who is not a BIG spender but one that has already hit all the bonuses I could get. I felt safe in £1.5k for 186k. 0.84p is what your “buying” these avios (not from bonuses etc) which is UNHEARD of. Even the 75% buy avios bonus offer a few years back was at 0.92p but ultimately its for you to decide. I felt confident in getting more than 1p so it works for me.

Is that for a boost x2 or a boost x3, the later seems to offer better value from what I read on here ?

It must be having an off day. My one looks much more plausible so maybe you have angered the gods of BA shopping?

Will you be crossing the maximum limit for discounted price if you buy this?

    I have 31,698 avios for £291.62.

Do not trifle with the BA shopping gods for they are capricious and will claw back your avios 12 months later when you thought they were safe!

I/DW sub to Avios for around £4k/year. Here’s my take:
    1. < 1ppp is OK in cash terms for large amounts
    2. Only if you are flying Club or First, or short-haul on expensive routes or last-minute
    3. Only if you have an AMEX 241
    4. Only if you are flexible where/when you go
    5. And must like numbered lists

That’s how we use them. I’d never buy/earn thinking I can get a specific destination/date cheaply, because chances are you won’t.
