Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Advice on long term travel with vouchers

  • 23 posts

Hi, I’m very new to collecting avios and vouchers but I’ve been planning ahead as my wife and I will be travelling around Asia for at least 12 months starting October 2024.
We will both have around 150k Avios each, Two 241 companion vouchers and at least one Barclay upgrade voucher.
Any advice on using the vouchers to gain the best value and experience, we are flexible on dates and which country we visit.
Potentially looking at Nepal/India to start things off, then onto Sri Lanka, Philippines and most of Asia.

Your vouchers are only good for BA, IB and EI. So in practice just for flights from the UK or Spain to Asia.

You Avios can be used with other partners like CX, QR or JL. But you won’t benefit from the vouchers then.

With your 125,000 avios each maybe you can plan the flights to India/HK/Singapore. You need to take the outbound flight BEFORE the voucher expires but can come back afterwards (don’t know if 1yr will be allowed).

Also, the Barclays voucher can only be used on flights FROM the UK. As you’ve plenty of time, read as much as you can on here (especially Rob’s articles on avios/vouchers/etc) to help you get the best value.

    Brilliant thank you.
So it looks like we will have to use the Barclay voucher first as this is from the UK only, (might be worth taking the 7k avios on my wife’s account as we might not be in the Uk To use that voucher) can the companion vouchers be used with BA departing from outside Uk? And is it worth booking these on long haul to make use of the avios saved?

The Amex voucher can be used from outside the UK but you are limited by the fact it has to be BA, IB or IE (so for instance an IB flight to Mexico is OK, a QR flight from MAD to Asia no). OR a return trip (for instance India back to UK) but again, only with BA, IB or IE.

IB and IE do not fly to Asia so your only option (for vouchers) is BA to or from India/Asia.

However you can check CX, QR, JL flights paying avios (for instance flying in Japan is just 7,000 Avios and £0 which means you can book and cancel as many times as you want!

It looks like getting to India/Nepal is ok, then I need to use companion voucher to get further into Asia using BA, do you know the best airport and routes that BA offer into Asia? A lot of what I see on the app is other airlines.

From Colombo (or a major India airport) -> would Singapore, Ho chi min be the best option trying to use BA 241

Here are all the routes: https://www.flightsfrom.com/explorer/LHR?airlines=BA and https://www.flightsfrom.com/explorer/LGW?airlines=BA

As you can see, there are a few options in India but you will have to try different dates see what works for you.

241 vouchers can be used for flights originating outside of the UK (e.g., HKG-LHR), but all flights must be on BA-operated planes (or EI or IB now too, I guess), so can’t see how the voucher could help you to get further into Asia if you’re already in India/Nepal.

You could use Avios for partner flights though without the voucher.

This is all super helpful info, it might make sense to head further into Asia straight from the UK on the 241 then catch smaller flights from there?

I may also swap the Barclay voucher to 7k avios as I can only use that from the Uk and this flight now looks like I’ll use the Amex 241
