We’ve got tickets to Bangladesh booked for December on Qatar. Last month, there’s been a revolution and earlier this month, the PM’s fled the country and a new interim govt in place. The UK’s issued a travel advisory against all but essential travel. While things are a bit calmer, it’s still potentially volatile, so we have no way of knowing when the advisory will be lifted.
I’ve never been in this scenario before. In such circumstances, what happens? Will Qatar offer to change the travel dates / destination / refund? Will insurance have to kick in? It’s still about 4 months till the outbound flights, but how long before the flights should I start to get worried and look for alternatives? Any info on this would be very much appreciated.
If Qatar are flying, they probably will not change their ticket rules for you. If you choose not to travel and it is not nonrefundable, you will lose the cost of the ticket. Do note, it is unusual for QR to issue tickets which are totally non-refundable: you will probably lose around $800 pp by cancelling, but not everything.
Many travel insurances will pay for you to cancel if the FCDO changes their advice after you book (or buy the travel insurance, whichever is later). This will cover the costs you are not able to recoup from Qatar, less your excess. Do check with your insurance company to confirm this is the case – with 4m in hand, you will be able to run through in advance with them what to do, to ensure you are fully covered.
Do note if you do travel whilst the FCDO advise against all but essential travel, your insurance may well also not cover the trip.
