Amex has already made it impossible to take out new cards in CI and from 2 Oct its officially “your residential address for your account must be an address in the United Kingdom”.
What may happen to existing cards/accounts? Will they be closed?
I’d happily give up my rights to own Amex cards to live on the island of Jersey. Seems like a small sacrifice personally.
@dan_a_man There was a panic about this in the news last week followed by an assurance that the new term would NOT apply to existing cardholders so AFAIK (for the time being) we are being grandfathered. There was also talk of the government of Jersey taking steps to engage with card providers to improve the availability of cards issued by UK providers for islanders. Not sure they’ll get much traction tbh as this is an issue due to the ring-fencing legislation in the UK and the only card providers still serving us are those with strong branch links in the islands – what real incentive is there for the big card providers to set up an alternative offering just for the relatively small markets in the Crown Dependencies? Finally, while you can get an HSBC Premier or Premier World Elite card via HSBC in the CI you cannot get a Barclays Avios card via Barclays Wealth CI and even though you can earn points on the HSBC cards there are some other quirks – e.g. I cannot get access to the current 25% bonus when transferring to Avios 🙁
I’ve had to resign myself to just holding my current suite of legacy cards (Amex Bus Plat, Virgin Rewards +, HSBC Premier World Elite and my ancient Creation Marriott card) and looking at creative ways to leverage that portfolio – The days of massive annual points earnings via the Amex churn are long gone…
@Harrier25 – I lol’d 🙂 Just remember that Guernsey is the thinking man’s Jersey 😉
😂 If it were offered, I probably wouldn’t turn down living on Guernsey either tbh.
My Amex cards are in the shredder!
Surely a small price to pay for a maximum income tax rate of 20 per cent?
