For short-haul Avios flights I usually book the “Avios + £17.50pp” option, as this tends to the best value of the options presented to you. The exception is for flights that I am likely to change, or speculative bookings – where I tend to go for the “More Avios + 50p” option, so that I don’t lose anything if I cancel.
I recently booked 4 of us from Gatwick to Amsterdam, 4,750 Avios + £17.50pp. However, some flights from City airport opened up, which logistically is much more convenient, so after much internal debate I decided to book these and cancel the Gatwick flights, losing £70 in the process.
To my pleasant surprise, when cancelling the original flights online, I was informed I would get a refund of £68, i.e. only lose 50p per person.
Is this a new “thing”, perhaps linked to the 50p tax option being the default option for RFS Avios flights now?
