Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I received an email from BAC this morning, advertising 20 Avios per £ spent on Avios Hotels. Sounds good, so I had a look and it seems to be hotel only, flight not included which begs the question as to whether BA are actually giving up selling flights and flying planes and are now just selling hotel rooms, credit cards and wine subscriptions…and also making us lose ATOL protection when booking a flight and holiday separately.

As an aside, I selected an all inclusive room option, then clicked Book Now. On the subsequent page, it had reverted to room only but at the same price as the all inclusive option so caveat emptor. Obviously, their virtual assistant was less than useless so I gave up and am looking elsewhere for a holiday.

BA really seem to have a shovel in one hand and a gun to their foot in the other at the moment.

Are you attributing any real value to ATOL protection when booking with BA? You will have package protections if booking the hotel within 24 hours of the flight.

It doesn’t really seem surprising for BA to sell other products alongside its core airline business.

Yes, I am surprised at them selling a hotel booking without a flight and leaving you to make your own choice as to who to book the flight with. OK, so the wine & credit cards comment was a bit tongue in cheek but I really can’t see why they wouldn’t at least make some attempt to sell you a BA flight at the same time when it’s an absolute given that you will need a flight to be able to use the hotel.

As I understand it, the short answer to this is because it’s owned by IAG Loyalty, not IAG, who simply want commission from your hotel booking. BA is just the name and logo only.
