I’m looking at reward flights from London to Mauritius and it looks like there’s more outbound availability than return, why would that be?

This is for economy, I’m assuming business is a 355 day situation?

    Thanks

This does seem to be an issue with very popular destinations, I wonder if people book multiple returns then cancel at the last minute when their plans are fixed? You definitely need to be booking at T-355, though if you have a companion voucher it may well open up more availability as time goes on.

Its possible people are traveling elsewhere outbound but stay for a few days in Mauritius before flying home.

Yes – I suppose a safari in Africa followed by some beach time in MRU is a good combination! Though how many of those would be grabbing the avios seats, I don’t know.

Have you tried starting your booking from elsewhere e.g. Manchester or Dublin? You might get more availability but might be inconvenient. We went last year and didn’t have a big problem with availability in J, although the extra 241 availability may have helped.

Isn’t MRU from LGW though? Massively inconvenient IMO!

Also I think extra availability is only from U.K. regionals. DUB can save a lot on surcharges for F redemptions but I don’t think there’s F to MRU.

All direct flights to Mauritus from the UK leave from LGW, so there’s not exactly a lot of choice to start with

@SSS, that’s what I meant. I would choose another destination with better connections – OP would have to start at the regional airport then find their way to LGW. I think there are only direct connections from GLA and possibly EDI now? But then I’ve considered MRU and decided it doesn’t really seem worth it for such a long flight when there are other options I haven’t done yet.

I hadn’t thought of people coming back from there after starting elsewhere. Seems like a lot though given the large disparity in availability going each way!

Getting to LGW from other airports seems like it would be tricky, so the effort probably better spent on a midnight scramble for direct flights!

Have you tried premium? For a booking last summer (hence made aug 22) there was plenty of premium available 11 months out – also OK for business but we are a family of 5 and didn’t have enough avios

You can also fly to Johannesburg on BA and then it’s 4h30 flight to MRU. I don’t think Comair flies the JNB-MRU route anymore so sadly not on Avios, but South African flies and others.

Comair doesnt fly any routes as they went bust a couple of years ago. Although BA has a couple of other partnerships in the region I dont think any offer avios booking

@Ant M you can tell I haven’t been to South Africa in years 🙂

It’s only 1ht 40m to transfer by train 1hr 21m by coach. MRU flights depart in the evening too. A bit inconvenient but may be better than other options.
