Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA 241 Amex voucher and Avios for trip to Hawaii in November

    Hi all,

I have spent like mad on the Amex card and got my 241 voucher today. I am trying to go to Hawaii (Oahu) via LA in November – reasonably fixed dates as it is my bday.

So Edi – LHR – LAX on 17th Nov
    LAX – HNL – 18th Nov
    HNL – LAX 29th Nov
Then LAX – LHR – EDI on 1st Dec

I can get the above for 2 on premium economy for £3141. No Avios and no companion voucher.I could use some Avios to lower this.

Today I have been looking and I don’t seem to be able to get to Honolulu using the voucher – so i looked and EDI – LAX and back in premium economy I can get for £660 plus 95,000 avios. The flights to Hawaii are approx £1,200 so using my companion voucer plus 95,000 avios seems to cost £1,860. Not sure if this seems worth it and also not that comfortable booking these flights on a separate ticket in November.

Welcome any thoughts on the value (e.g. 95,000 Avios and a companion voucher to save £1,300) – and is there a way to try and book this all under one booking? Is calling them the best option?

    Thanks for any advice!

I looked at this earlier in the year ready for 2024 trip. The jist of my research and help from people on here is that you can pay your way but if you use vouchers you will need to get as far as you can on the west cost and then book a separate trip to Hawaii.

If points are valued at £950 then I’d say that’s a better route than burning hard cash, As ever there are several ways of skinning the cat (loads of west coast destinations) and then it’s what you feel works for you,

FWIW we’ve not yet booked but looked at Phoenix, then onwards and also going the other way with Finnair to Seoul and onwards

You can’t get to Honolulu with the voucher because none of the 3 airlines you can use it on fly there! There were some great ideas in @Richard Peters’ thread if you have a look for it.

What about using Google Flights – really good.

I can get Mon Nov 20th MXP-LHR-LAX-HNL in Business, back Sat Dec 2nd from HNL-Seattle on Alaskan and then BA SEA-LHR. Try and book the LHR-MXP for the following moring to give a 22hr-ish overnight connection and you’ll have no problem checking your bags to LHR.

So £2,291 in business all the way and back, plus Easyjet to Italy and a cheap BA single LHR-EDI.

Think of the BA status and all those avios earned!

ps £3 more and you can do Rome.

26k rtn from PHX, LAX, SFO to HNL or Oahu in Y is some of the best use of Avios anywhere.

Thanks for the responses and i will look into the other options – I guess my concern is that in November weather could be worse so risking getting to and from Milan is a concern – but i will check it out.

Thanks Richard – it seems like I am in the same position – we were hoping for a quick layover on the way there and I am concerned about delays when not booking tickets all together.

    I will keep investigating!

You could start in ARN for £2.2 pp business class or £1.1k prem economy.
Similar prices out of OSL for your exact dates.
