I currently have the free BA Amex card. It is my first Amex. Can I sign up for the gold card and get the sign up bonus, or do I need to cancel by Amex card and wait 24 months?
No, unfortunately you are now unable to get any personal Amex sign up bonus other than the Platinum unless you cancel and wait 24m.
Nectar/Bonvoy then Plat or BAPP then whichever of BAPP or Plat you haven’t held are the only sequence to get multiple sign up bonuses.
