Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA Club OnBoard Free WiFi Hack?

  • 1 post

    Hi All

Can anybody confirm if whislt connected to the free messaging only onboard WiFi for BA Club members they’ve managed to successfully message any of the AI chatbots?

I’ve just realised in WhatsApp you can message the MetaAI chatbot from the search box or you can message ChatGPT on +1 800 242 8478. However, I’ve not got any BA flights coming up soon so can’t test out if it works.

My thinking here is this then allows me to do some sembelance of ‘web searching’ whilst only on the free messaging only service and probably stop annoying various contacts of mine who i start messaging out of boredom on the flight….

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve never heard about this being possible. I’ll have c.12+ hours to JNB and back in mid May-early June on BA (economy!!), so I’ll give this a go and report back if nobody else does before then.

You can access some websites whilst using the free messaging WiFi on BA. I was browsing hfp whilst flying to Athens on Saturday. It’s pretty slow obviously but it does work.

I can confirm that WhatsApp based ChatGPT is working fine.

You can access all websites for free with a VPN + proxy, I have been doing this on board BA for over a year.

Unless by ‘some websites’ you just meant that the slow speed (rarely over 25 kB/s for me) makes many websites with extensive scripting and media take too long to load.

(I don’t know if general browsing works without the VPN, as on my phone it’s always on anyway – not going to say more in case a Mr X-like character spoils it)

Why do you need a VPN to browse HFP

Yes this is what I meant.

I’ve been in IT for 20 years. I don’t use a VPN unless I have to in order to connect to a network (e.g. connect to a corporate network).

As long as you’re using HTTPS and haven’t done anything stupid (like accept a self signed certificate) then a man in the middle attack is impossible.

There’s a lot of hype and FUD around VPNs.

You have an app (the BA one for example). You are at an airport. You connect to public wifi. Via DHCP, it gives you a DNS server but the DNS server is under the control of the bad guy and they direct mobile.ba.com to their own IP address that has a valid SSL certificate – just for a different address – but you are using an app so you can’t see it. You connect, provide your user name and password. Not strictly a man-in-the-middle attack but you get the idea.

Well apart from DNS and not knowing how secure communications of apps are… I’ll stick with my VPN thanks. If you are happy to connect to FreeBAWifi in the lounge (I just created that hotspot) then feel free. I’ll redirect your request to ba.com to https://breetishairways.keermetthefroooog.com and hoover up your Avios.
