Hi all,
I am quite new to the whole points game and would appreciate any advice on here.
A while ago, I have booked a return flight from London to Dubai with 90K Avios and £582 taxes and surcharges for premium economy outbound and business class inbound.
As of now, the current cash price for that same flight is £1,646 so if my math is correct, I am getting around 1.18p per 1 Avios. At the time of the booking, it was more expensive and I was getting around 1.4p per 1 Avios.
I have never flown business class or premium economy before, both flights are overnight and the business class is the 787 product.
Is that poor value? I am considering cancelling and going with Emirates economy for £500 return and keeping my Avios for a better redemption.
Cheers
A lot on here aim for about 1p per point so 1.18p a point is decent.
Don’t get blindsided by the pence per point side of things. That is only a side note. Allowing you to fly in more comfort/more enjoyably is well worth considering putting a “value” on that is not just monetary.
I think you got a pretty good deal, but it is all personal preference. I think anything over 1p per Avios is a decent redemption.
But it you are prepared to travel economy (I wouldn’t), I think £500 is at the top end of the price I’d pay.
I’m not really sure what you’d class as a ‘better’ redemption. You’re probably not going to do a huge amount better without a Barclays upgrade voucher or an Amex 2for1 – unless you mean you’re thinking about holding out for a business class redemption on a flight with Club Suite, or are considering using the Avios for a return flight in business class.
Have you considered a redemption with Qatar? Whilst it means a connection in Doha, you could do return in business class for 100K avios.
BTW If it’s a B787-10 aircraft, business is Club Suite with the door.
I’d you’d be happy in emirates economy for £500 return, then I don’t think you’ve gotten 1.18p per Avios.
If you have *never* flown business or premium before then you should definitely take this redemption.
Only once you’ve sampled these products can you put a price on Avios (or other airmiles) in the future.
Some value them very highly — and frequent these forums – others think it’s a waste of money unless it’s a very cheap upgrade from Economy. Try it, and you’ll have an opinion too.
Overnight is also the best time to test as the service is poor and the sleeping important. It’s all about the comfort and the seat. Be prepared to skip all the meals and just sleep as soon as you board. That’s what pro travellers do.
