Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum Dining Credit – purchase abroad vouchers from UK?

There’s one in NYC that just worked for me a few days ago.

I don’t want to post the name, but it should be fairly easy to find given that —

    1. I’ve provided the location (New York City)
    2. There’s a link to buy gift cards on the website and, when you click, you’ll get taken to a toasttab.com website. This is the same POS as the restaurant uses to process actual orders (which is presumably why buying gift cards in this way works)

This is brilliant thank you. I have trawled the restaurants available and found there are multiple using toasttab. Could you possibly give one more clue please?

To be honest, I think *any* restaurant processing gift cards through toasttab would probably be OK. Some US Amex cards have a similar restaurant credit for Resy (different set of restaurants to choose from) and I’ve used those credits at a bunch of restaurants buying GCs through various toasttab portals (I’m a US expat, so I’ve got some US Amex cards as well. This trick has worked well to use those credits given that I’m not in the US every month!).

But, to answer your question and to give one more hint about the specific transaction my prior post alluded to. What’s the opposite of black?

Thanks for this tip. Unfortunately I’m getting a “card not authorized” error when checking out. Presumably because it asks for a zip code and it’s a UK card… Any ideas on how to get around this?

Agree with Rob’s suggestion however, when I made the purchase I did not have an issue entering my UK postcode in the UK format.
Another option I used to utilise during my travelling days was just to enter a random zipcode – usually my intended hotel zipcode

Thanks all – toasttab also just worked for me.

Does anyone know if SquareUp or any other POS works similar to Toast?

Amazing, I just used it for a LA based restaurant that also uses Toasttab and it worked fine! Thanks for posting.

Thanks, so grateful this came up in my feed, just bought for LA and got it and the confirmation within minutes. Was there a couple of months ago but never got round to going as didn’t want to dine there alone, thought I’d lost the credit! Will be there next week and will be using it along with next year’s credit!

    Happy new year!

Thanks would any of the two posters who found restaurants in la that worked via toasty mind naming them or at least hinting at them to help those of us trying to sort this last minute today?
In the spirit of goodwill and all that!

It seems that any restaurants that process gift cards through toasttab would probably be OK. I tried one in Washington DC and it worked (received the Amex email instantly).
If you trawl through the LA restaurants list, you’ll find one that takes you to toasttab when clicking on Gift Card.

Thanks all on this thread – took the plunge and it worked for me, got a nice voucher and the cashback has been successfully credited for an NYC restaurant. Fingers crossed it is still valid for my planned April 2026 trip to NY – but looking at a few restaurants on Amex no mention of any expiry dates, and one other restaurant says they never expire….

Thanks to all for sharing your experiences. I also bought a gift card through toasttab for a Washington restaurant on 31st. I was a bit nervous because it took until 2nd Jan for the pending transaction to show up on my account, but the credit has come through today.

It has been suggested on the forum to allow a trusted person to add your card to Apple Wallet and enable them to use it in an international location. Just to warn you, I tried that and it triggered a fraud alert. I started getting emails from Amex as they said the card was not allowed to be added. This was followed by a phone call from Amex. On researching, I found that, although the same card can be added to 10 devices and details are protected, the card company is sent some information such as the person’s name (who is adding it), their location, post/zip code. I am not sure if you can call and ask Amex to authorise another individual to add your card to their wallet. Also be careful about you doing a transaction in the UK and the same card being used on someone else’s Apple Wallet a few hours apart if the place is say, across the Atlantic.
