I have a return flight to New Orleans in August. I paid for a premium seat there and back and about a month ago, a business class avios upgrade became available which I booked. They have now released some business class avios seats on the return leg so I called to upgrade. I was told that it was an extra £505.31 in taxes! The original tax I paid was £697.61 and now it’s £1,202.91. How can the taxes be so high on just one upgrade? I asked them to recheck and they said it was correct. I can’t see how they can justify £505.31 by moving from Premium to business – anyone any ideas??
Quite a few reports of taxes being quoted wrongly by BA CS atm, have you tried HUACA or asking to check with a supervisor? If you have a trawl through similarly titled threads there will probably be some more suggestions!
Yes, she did check with her supervisor who said the same thing!!! I will have a look at the other threads. Sometimes BA make it sooo difficult!! Thank you
PS – can you please advise what HUACA is?
Stop talking about taxes.
This is the BA surcharge and they can charge what they like.
And they charge more ex USA than they do ex UK,
Not since RFS arrived. Everyone knows that “taxes” is short for BA’s rip-off cash grab!
Yes but it’s sloppy and inaccurate.
And since it looks like @ClairB has a cash paid WTP ticket surely RFS isn’t a factor in the cost of the upgrade but it’s a straight X avios and Y cash.
They’ll also be the change fee to pay.

Ah, but BA told me it was a tax – no surcharge was mentioned!! I upgraded a flight from Dallas to LHR in October from cash WTP to business and only got charged around £200, so this is ridiculous! I will try again in a day or so.
Request your eticket from finnair.com
Then price up the flight to buy for cash in business both ways
The difference in “taxes” is the difference between the “YQ” amount
They often get this wrong so it’s good to do this calculation first
They’ve been creeping these amounts up recently so if you book your original ticket a long time ago it might not be incorrect
