Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club BA cancels Companion Voucher booking after cancelling Amex Card?

  • 5 posts

Hi there – My black Amex BA card is coming to it’s renewal date in Jan and I want to cancel it to avoid the new year of charges. I have return NY flights booked for a month in April in First using the companion voucher I earned. I called BA and they said that they would cancel the booking if I were to cancel the the card. Also, even if I downgraded the blue version, they would also cancel the booking.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have never heard of this before and and used the premium companion voucher after cancelling the card many times. Just wondering if this is a new rule, or whether it’s hidden in the t&c’s somewhere.

    Thanks for the help!

The terms did change, but I’m pretty sure, it was almost the opposite of this; I.e. you only have to pay the taxes using any Amex, whereas previously it was that you had to pay with the card that earned the voucher (even though it was not enforced). I don’t think there was any mention of existing bookings being affected.

Maybe ask them to point you in the direction of the terms which state that the booking will be cancelled if you cancel your card? Also, if you want to cancel the card, contact Amex not BA.

The terms changed in the summer to allow payment with any Amex card, no longer requiring it to be a BA Amex. However, the terms do appear to distinguish between cancelling the card which would potentially breach the terms by rendering you ineligible for the promotion at the time of travel, but this would not apply if you downgraded. The risk is small but in view of Amex generally tightening up on things and creating obstacles to card merry-go-rounds, it should not be ignored entirely. It’s up to each cardholder to weigh up the risk.

Great. Thanks for the help! I will try and call again (hopefully get a different person who says it’s fine!) and ask to point the t&c’s

You might be better to read the terms yourself. If you don’t fancy reading through them, you are looking for paragraph 32.

Are you calling BA, though? What is that going to achieve?

Really no point calling them up, read the t&c’s and JDB’s comments. To this point, evidence of BA cancelling vouchers, is limited at best, but what’s happened in the past doesn’t dictate the future

As @JDB has previously noted, the fastest way to get a loophole tightened up is to keep drawing attention to it!
