I need 2 more flights before March 31st so am nipping up to NCL and back tomorrow morning before half term flight to MLE. BA has just offered me an upgrade on my domestic flights for £595! After some thought, I declined.
That’s the cost not the value. They aren’t the same!
I flew LHR-NCL-LHR in CE last year, and despite the service being very good, and the plane having the new, larger overhead bins, I don’t think it was quite worth nearly £600 on top of what the ET fare would have been!
That would be the value to BA – if anyone was daft enough or desperate enough to pay it!
An empty seat is like an unbooked management consultant’s hour – you can’t sell it later. So they might offer you an upgrade at full fare, but don’t want to sell it below that if there’s only a couple of seats left in case someone rocks up at the last minute desperate to be on the flight. Similarly, if they can get an extra £200 from you they sell an empty biz seat and make more $$$ than if you sit in economy.
Spent many, many flight on a full-fare economy ticket because the company policy is no CE. Difference in price?? Usually less than £20.

But, and depending on your company, your company may well get a 50% rebate on the cost of your expensive economy ticket at the end of the year.
