Flight tonight Edinburgh to Heathrow. Then flight tomorrow Heathrow to Tokyo. Question is – can I check in my bag tonight at Edinburgh airport and have it straight through to Tokyo or do I need to collect it at Heathrow tonight? Both flights on one ticket…

Yes you can and should be straight through if on one PNR.
