Forums Payment cards American Express BAPP – to downgrade or cancel?

  • 1 post

I got the BAPP last October as my first credit card and was able to snag 60000 sign-up bonus and the 2-4-1 CV, which I used for a solo First Class BA trip to the US in August. I also got a Barclaycard Avios Plus card in April and received the 25000 welcome bonus as well as the upgrade voucher. I have now downgraded the Barclaycard to the free version but unsure of what to do with the BAPP which is due for renewal at the end of this month.

    I’m currently considering two options:
    A. Cancel the BAPP to reset the 24 month’s bonus eligibility period. However, I’m worried about the impact that the cancellation will have of my credit record and the general wisdom of going two years without the CV.

    B. Downgrade to the free BA (or other Amex) card to keep the account active being my oldest. This means I will be able to get only the less valuable 2-4-1 CV.

I’m struggling to justify the £300 fee and increased CV earning threshold earn without a significant sign-up bonus to cushion them (I know I can ask Amex for a retention bonus but since it’s a less certain path, hasn’t factored much into my calculations).

What would you do in my shoes?

1 If your not running enough to achieve sufficient amount of Avios and can’t make the new 15k then it’s pretty clear.
2 Churning from some recent evidence seems to be be catching Amex’s eye now.
3 I would factor and claim the retention bonus.

The retention bonus for BAPP is extremely poor and not worth wasting your time on most get £50 for very high spend.

Personally I’d cancel it. If your oldest card is really 1 year old it’s not making any difference to your credit report.

Get another none Amex none rewards you can hold for years without messing with your points game.
