Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclay Premier / Barclaycard Customers NOT eligible for the 100k (Advice?)

  • 37 posts

Not used this forum very much before but I thought I would see what you all suggest and if you have any advice for me.

I have been a life-long Barclays Customer and when the Barclays Premier Avios account was launched, I upgraded and got my earth-shattering 2,500 Avios “welcome bonus”. Yes this wasn’t the 25,000 Avios offered to new Barclays customers, but in the wider picture of benefits, I was able to overlook this.

I have also had a standard Barclaycard Platinum which was barely ever used but had as a good emergency backup card, especially when travelling. Once Barclaycard announced their new Avios Mastercard, I also enquired how I could join. This was the time before transfers were an option and having called Barclaycard and read the advice from HFP, I opted to cancel the Barclaycard, wait six months and apply afresh. This six month would be up in jan/feb 2023.

I am not what some would term a “points chaser” or anything like that, merely a loyal Barclays / Barclaycard customer and avid Avios collector. I was one of the first people to sign-up to the Premier Avios Account and simply followed the advice offered by Barclaycard, actions you’d expect from a loyal customer.

I am sure you can therefore understand my utter frustration that new and existing customers to either could then earn an amazing 100,000 Avios bonus for opening one or the other products. A less loyal person who held off joining premier would now be eligible. Similar if I had not taken Barlaycards own advice to cancel the card, I would now be eligible to transfer across. Instead the loyal enthusiastic customer gets 2,500 avios instead of 100,000…

Now in the game of Avios, this may just have be put down as a “some you win, some you lose” situation. Frustrating but unavoidable from time to time. But I would like to hear from you to see what you think I should do, and to see if anyone else has made progress who was in my situation (surely I’m not the only one…?)

    – Complain? – I wrote a formal complaint to both Barclays and Barclaycard and their response stated how they understood my frustration and disappointment but there was nothing that can be done and no gesture of good will was possible on this occasion. Did anyone else get anywhere by way of a complaint and what advice would you offer? I’m thinking of phoning up and seeing what a more personable approach may get but I’m not holding my breath.

    – Leave Barclays? – I am a life-long Barclays customer in their late 30’s and am now a Premium Customer. I see HSBC Premier Banking is offering £200 to switch accounts and as I have an income in excess of £75k and have a HSBC Mortgage, I would be eligible for the Premier account and credit card. Is this enough of a reason to make the jump? loyalty seems not to be rewarding afterall! I have already earned 1x Barclays Cabin Upgrade, do I need another this year?

    – Do nothing? – As of Jan/Feb next year i will be eligible for the new Barclaycard and can apply and get their 25,000 sign-up bonus. I could even not sign up and wait/hope for a new offer to come on stream? Was this 100k offer a one-off or could their be others? There’s also talk of the cabin upgrade vouchers being replaced with a fixed amount of avios? 10k? 25k? 50k? who knows? If this process has taught me one this, its that its not always wise to jump immediately on an offer, though other experiences have proved otherwise.

So, if you have read this far (firstly thank you for taking the time) i have obviously peaked your interest…

So what would you do in my shoes… Answer on a postcard (below) please… :O)

Sorry what was the context of your complaint?

That you weren’t eligible for an offer?

Accept that you were not eligible (honestly cannot see the reason for a complaint, that is way too much for my taste).

Switch to HSBC and bag up the complimentary insurance and open a Barclays account again after 6-12 months to bag all the bonuses 🙂

You aren’t really that loyal a Barclays customer if you have an HSBC mortgage. That’s why they offer 100K Avios to non Barclays customers. So they can upsell financial products

Just been told that my barclaycard and premier account were not linked, hence no 100k avios email.
The only thing that was causing this was the second line of address which I have removed to ensure linkage between the two.

Has anyone faced this issue? Held both products as required since 30-Nov

I had a similar situation, cancelled Barclays CC in June and therefore not eligible.
I will just wait until the next opportunity.

I will be putting a complaint in if they sort out the linkage, now they are saying the email and phone number dont match

I’m not sure I see grounds for a complaint. Frustration, sure, and only you can decide if the frustration and annoyance warrant changing bank.
I think phoning to try your more personable approach is likely to lead only to further frustration, waiting to speak with someone who isn’t able to make a personalised decision.
Sometimes jumping on an offer is the winning play, sometimes it pays to hold back. Never pays to get too riled when it turns out you made the wrong call.

    @Carlos

Yes, had the same with the address on my new BC application not exactly matching the one on my 30 year old current account. I resolved this on the phone… eventually… and received the 100k email about a week after. I didn’t expect the email and wasn’t chasing those avios. What I wanted and got was my BC to appear on the Barclay’s app, and the £5pm fee rebate.
I rate my chances of getting the 100k as about 60-40, but as an existing premier customer I’ve already got more than I expected when Barclay’s first announced the avios tie-up. Some you win.

The barclaycard is an upgraded platinum product which is a couple years old now, however what was interesting is that their address selector (when recently opening the premier account only allows you to enter a postcode and auto populates the address for you (hence missing address line 2 which is listed on the older product) I would value the 100k much more than a £50 inconvenience complaint payment so I would ideally like to get this resolved, they said it will be updated within 24 hours and then I shall await the 100k avios email (or chase it up in a few days)

I can see my 25k signing up bonus on my Barclays app but it never transferred to avios beginning of this month (but got the monthly 1.5k) there is no date next to the 25k like it is with the 1.5k, just wondering when i will get it, does it have a date next to yours?

Hmmm, the 25k does not show in my avios rewards tab where the 1500 appear. The BC rewards tab (where I guess it would more likely appear) is glitching, looping between Nov 22 and Dec 6, so I can’t see the relevant date. 25k appeared in my BA app with “finance card” by it on the 17th.
I wouldn’t give up hope as for some reason no avios transferred at the start of this month. Hopefully you’ll get yours when the next sweep happens.
I perhaps wasn’t clear that I actually became a new BC holder back in the spring when the card was first launched. I am taking this 25k to cover 4 phone calls to get the accounts linked and 8 months of no £5 fee rebate.

Same here. I can see the 25k points labelled as “Avios Prem Joining Bonus” but there’s no date and not posted to my Avios account.

I’ve also not long switched an account into my Prem account so there should be another 25k coming at some point. Then finally the 100k when the 4 month mark hits.

    Fingers crossed…

@nwoody2001 I was in a similar situation like you, long time Barclays customer and for many years already Premier and on Blue Rewards with some extra Barclays Products. When Avios Rewards was launched on the account I decided to switch from Blue Rewards and only got the smaller sign up bonus. However as I also had two legacy Barclaycard no longer on offer and that I did not want to lose at the time (one being the Hilton card, and one my oldest Credit Card account), plus I also have the HSBC Premier WE paid for, I decided not to switch to the Avios Barclaycard and not even considered closing both cards for a future bonus.

However when the 100,000 bonus for holding both accounts came about, I decided to product chance one of my Barclaycard to the Avios plus and got the bonus, so unfortunately you risked in order to qualify for a sign up bonus with the card and missed the opportunity to qualify for a different bonus announced later. The Barclaycard advisor would have not known of this particular promotion when he advised you to close the account and wait 6 months for the card SUB.

In any case, you do not need to switch away from Barclays to get the HSBC account and CASS incentive (I have Premier accounts with Barclays, HSBC, NatWest and Santander). You can open a secondary account with Barclays, perhaps set up the necessary standing orders /DD required for the HSBC switching bonus, and then switch seats this new account to HSBC (maintaining therefore your older, proper Barclays Account). You could also open an account with a different bank to use as a “donor” account for the switch. Monzo or Starling can be easy to open for this purpose. HSBC main attraction for me is the free Travel Insurance on the account.

The only thing is that you need to remember to circulate at list £3300 per month into your old Barclays Premier account (you can simply pay in and out from/to your new HSBC account within minutes of each transaction) to avoid the new account fees and/or meet any additional eligibility criteria for the Avios Rewards.

Well I’m frustrated now. I applied and was accepted to both Premier banking and the Avios plus card in mid-November. My billing cycle for my existing barclaycard was due 02/12/12, so this was the date that appeared in my app as the transfer date – nothing I could do about that. I even queried with Rob on the main post and he confirmed it’s the date you are approved for the card, not the transfer date, that matters as the qualifying date.

Of course, Barclays are now saying it’s the transfer date that is key so I don’t qualify for the offer.

Complete shambles, I also had the account linking issues and went into the branch to get that sorted back in November too!

    Never touching Barclays again

I wouldn’t trust what Barclays say. Wait until the 4 months is up. Barclays is apparently going to set up dedicated enquiry lines for this promo. I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine because, up to the last day, they were advertising that you could upgrade an existing card.

Will the promo be returning in 2023?

Honestly no idea – no Amex, Virgin or Barclays bonuses on the way based on what we know. Can’t image Barclays trying this again until at least late 2023 given that they won’t ‘settle up’ on this one until April.

The 25k showing up in the app is normal, it will post after month 4, from my experience (just after the third £12 monthly payment was taken, they posted, separately to the 1,500 for that month but on the same day). My OH’s account is showing the same and I’m sure they’ll post in the month after the third £12 is taken.

    That’s promising to read.

I also completed a current account switch to my premier account and still awaiting the 25k points for that to make an appearance…
