Barclaycard Avios / Plus cards bonus points

I have just received a free BC Avios card which will attract a bonus of 5000 Avios points for a 1k spend within 3 months. I am now thinking of upgrading to the Plus card which will give 25000 points for a 3k spend. My question is whether I can hit the 5k points then upgrade and hit the further 25k points 3 months later?

Alternatively should I hold off hitting the 1k spend in order to not trigger the 5k bonus then upgrade to the Plus card? In this scenario will I qualify for the 25k bonus points or does having the free card count as having had a previous card?

Final question is whether I automatically receive a £5 discount on the Plus card as I am already a Premier account holder. Grateful for any advice / comments. Many thanks.

We’ll only apply one Avios Welcome Bonus in relation to your card to your BAEC account during the lifetime of
your card account. If you close your card account after you receive your Avios Welcome Bonus and then open
another Barclaycard Avios card account within 2 years after you closed the original account, you will not be
eligible for another Avios Welcome Bonus.

I understand that moving from one card to another is treated as closing one account then opening another, so no double bonus.

You need a break between cards to get a 2nd bonus, and you also need to have the offer to upgrade showing on your account to be eligible.

I’ve gone from the Plus card to the free card and back again. Can confirm that I wasn’t eligible for (and did not receive) the Welcome Bonus on either downgrade or upgrade (per the rule mentioned above).

But we’re you able to get a upgrade voucher on plus, then the free then another on plus?!

Yes. No problem with earning a new voucher after switching cards each time. Of course, no one can say how many times Barclaycard will offer an upgrade / downgrade.

The offers seem to be taking a few months to appear in the app as well. Mine showed up about 4 months after opening the avios plus card, but people have posted that it’s taken longer.
