Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclaycard Avios Plus – spending above £10K

  • 23 posts

I’m close to spending £10K on my BC Avios Plus card so will be getting the upgrade voucher soon.

Does anyone know how BC handle spending above £10K in the same year? Does it get rolled over to next year or anything or is it just normal spending that doesn’t count to any further upgrade vouchers?

    Thanks

No rollover (don’t think there are any cards that do), just normal Avios earnings.

If you’re likely to be spending enough you could downgrade to the free card (if the option is available in the app) and earn another voucher for £20K spend there.

Just to touch on what @AndrewT said; if you downgrade after you’ve hit the £10k, and redeemed the voucher (this is crucial), then if you downgrade, your counter will reset to £0, and if you spend a further £20k in your card year, you’ll earn another voucher.

It doesn’t apply to you, but you should never upgrade from the free card to the paid card after you’ve hit £10k, as the spend will reset to £0 (it doesn’t work like the Amex cards).

@AndrewT and @aq.1988 – If one were to do the downgrade, would you know how open Amex is with re-upgrades once the new card year starts?
Also – since the voucher threshold is resetting to £15k from 1st Nov.. would it mean you spend 10k now to get the Premium voucher, and then have to spend only another 5k to get the second voucher?

Just to clarify, the OP was asking about the Barclaycard Avios Plus.

I think there have been some reports of people getting rejected for upgrades and downgrades on the Amex BA cards through chat, but were approved by following the direct link online to upgrade/downgrade. How long Amex allow this is uncertain, especially as pro-rata refunds are due to eventually end.

If you value earning a companion voucher each year, it’s a risky game to play for a pro-rata refund of a few months card year tbh.

But, to answer your question, you’ll need to hit £10k by 1st November to earn the voucher, otherwise the target will increase to £15k by your next renewal (whenever that is). If you hit the £10k in time, you can’t earn towards a new voucher until your next renewal date. And unlike the Barclaycard, you cannot earn 1 voucher with the BAPP, and another with the free card in the same year. If you up/downgrade, the spend to date counts towards the voucher target, whereas, with the Barclaycard, it resets to £0.
