Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclaycard entitlement (income or other) criteria?

Do we know anything about this? My elderly friend is thinking of applying for one to pay her (at home) care fees (they take M’card and Visa, sadly no Amex) so her kids can get the benefit of the Avios and upgrade vouchers. Her only income is pensions (private and state) though I’ve no idea what level her income is. Ideally the 1.5 Avios per £ one but she’d settle for the 1 per £ one if it was unlikely she’d be given the “better” one.

Your friend’s age might be more of an issue than her income. She could do an eligibility check though that’s not always 100% correct. Could one of her children apply for the card instead?

@louie – there’s a minimum personal income requirement of £20k on the Barclaycard and no stated upper age bar, only 21 minimum. My Dad is 97 and has a Barclaycard!

Barclaycard is legally obliged to consider affordability and that can be a barrier for older people, particularly when they have little disposable income after care costs.

Thanks for the replies. The children all live abroad so wouldn’t qualify for a card.

I didn’t know about the income requirement but was hoping someone would; pretty sure that would be OK. My dad too has two Amex cards at 92 – one taken out quite recently. She’s a fair bit older than him and has been fully independent until now. Guess she can give it a go and see what happens.
