Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Best options for Bangkok/Phuket with Avios/virgin

  • 317 posts

I have various upgrade vouchers with virgin and BA and am looking to travel to Bangkok and Phuket in November. I know neither fly direct so I’m trying to find the best way to get there to make use of my vouchers.

I see that I can get halfway to Doha on a direct BA flight or with Qatar. The BA flight seems pointless as even using a Barclays upgrade voucher, the Avios required would be the same as using no voucher for a Qatar Avios redemption. I can then redeem Avios from Qatar to Bangkok but it’s 100k (plus c 85k London to Doha).

Ideally I’d book with virgin as I have more points and vouchers. They don’t serve many eastern routes, Shanghai seems like a good option with plenty of availability but it seems like there are very few routes to Bangkok from there? Any other good routes to utilise virgin?

BA have routes to Hong Kong with availability coming up now and again in club world so that may be the option. I just would rather avoid the cramped 777 cabin with the old ying/yang layout.

Also willing to travel to another starting destination for other ideas-ie using virgin points on KLM, Air France etc.

You wouldn’t be able to use any virgin vouchers but have you thought about using virgin points on ANA to Japan as these are very well priced points wise although availability might be hard to find. I know Japan is a little out your way but it is a suggestion. You can use United site to find ANA partner availability then ring up Virgin Atlantic to book?

India isn’t a bad option, often good availability, it’s not far to Thailand and plenty of flights. However you’d def need an e visa if you do BA unless you can travel hand luggage only. Not sure how Virgin are about checking through on seperate tickets

Shanghai is far from Bangkok so not sure that is worthwhile

If you don’t need to use vouchers then Avios does offer plenty of options into Thailand – Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Sri Lankan, Malaysian Airlines, Qatar, Royal Jordanian

Virgin points on Air France / KLM / Korean Air / Vietnam Airlines could be an option now that they’re joining Skyteam – not sure how availability is though

Finnair to phuket is great to start/finish your trip as otherwise u need to stopover anyway. Ams-kul on klm with virgin points. Vouchers can only be used on BA/virgin metal so u are limited going east if u want to use vouchers

@sturgeon, did you jump on the award tickets this week?

Or sell the camper van/use some of that £100k stashed away 🤷‍♀️

As long as she doesn’t hotspot off the parliament laptop, because that doesn’t normally end well😉
