Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Booking an award flight for a child without an adult

  • 4 posts

Is there a way to book a child award without an adult reservation made through BA? I want to use my avios to book an award flight for my extra child. The adult reservation was made through another carrier but they said they can’t link it. I called the executive line and they wouldn’t let me book it even though I have a reservation through another carrier.

I don’t think BA allow unaccompanied minors any more – AFAIK a child has to be 14 or over to have a standalone booking. This might be why the system won’t process such a booking. If yours is a cash booking it probably isn’t possible to link an award booking to it.

Correct (having just had a similar issue). Under 14’s can’t be booked, 14 and 15 year olds need a special form to be filled in together with paper copies of the parent passport – something BA will NOT tell you in advance.

In addition to @Rob’s comments you need to call BA to book 14/15 year olds. It’s worth noting also that in addition to BA’s documentation requirements many countries require special documentation for children either travelling alone, with only one parent or another adult – South Africa has historically been particularly strict.

No – the forms apply to 14 and 15 year olds. You haven’t said what kind of booking you’re on – if it’s an award or flexible booking you might need to consider cancelling and rebooking for all of you.

Airlines have obviously decided it’s more trouble than it’s worth to have younger children on solo bookings. I booked a separate BA ticket for my son last year when he was 16 and had to join us at the last minute due to grandparents getting Covid. We were fine on the way out, but on our return from BOS he was unable to check in online and when we went to the airport the ground crew said they had to check he was travelling with an adult before they would allow him on the flight.
