Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Booking award flights on Finnair

So I’m using AA.com to check reward flight availability on Finnair from AMS to HKG via HEL. I’m desperate to avoid BA and have found availability on pretty much every date option I want, but when I switch to BA to try and book, they only want to route me via Heathrow with themselves. Same trying to book flights on CX.

We really want to fly on the A350 and whilst Qatar is an option, at least to Doha on the A350, they have always been a let down (in my experience) with last minute equipment changes.

Is anyone here aware how to book a Finnair redemption from Europe, using Avios, other than starting from HEL?

    Thanks so much in advance,

    Stu

This could be a married segments issue.

What comes up if you search BA for AMS-HEL and then HEL-HKG separately?

You can book direct CX AMS-HKG reward flights on BA.com. For example if i search on a random date of 27/03/2024, then it gives me the option for the CX270 direct flight. They use the A359 on that route.

If you’re not finding CX direct flights on the date options you want, then I assume there’s no availability with them

I can get flights from AMS to HEL, and from HEL to HKG, but the miles price is way higher than the published ‘other airlines’ redemption figures per person in biz … 88,000 + 309,000!

Yep, I just found that … sorry I meant to mention we’re looking for biz tickets – they’re not showing for 27/03/24 so I think it’s safe to assume there is literally zero availability.

I’m starting to think that other than Qatar, long haul redemptions in biz (on other than BA) are extremely few and far between.

The problem here is the flight departure time for HEL-HKG sector (since it is departing after midnight). If you meant to depart from AMS on 27MAR2024 via HEL, the HEL-HKG segment will actually depart on 28MAR2024.

BA IT system cannot handle this type of itinerary (2 flights departing on different date), so they are not displayed in the search result if you are looking for AMS-HKG. You should still be able to search AMS-HEL and HEL-HKG separately. If you have confirmed BA is showing the separate segments and AA.com is showing combined segments, then it is bookable but only possible via phone because of BA’s IT system incompetence…

AY J spaces are not easy to find, but generally they are available for the dates closer to the end of 355-day booking window

And for Avios amount, you should expect the summation of both segments. If in J all the way, it should be 16500+77250 = 93750 one-way

Could you consider adding another one world carrier to your itinerary to make it a multi carrier redemption? The other flight could be weeks or even months earlier / later?

Depending on how OP plans the itinerary – The more segments added to the booking, the more likely the multi carrier redemption would be worthwhile.

If it’s solely for AMS-HEL-HKG segment, even with the right planning, I don’t think the benefits would worth the hassle. It really depends on one’s understanding on this subject
