Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Bought my outbound want to make it a return but no Avios left – issue?

    Hi,

I’ve booked 4 outbound tickets for my family trip to Abu Dhabi using my companion voucher.

When the tickets are released, I want to make it a return, merge my ticket and apply my companion to cover both outbound and inbound. The issue is I have no Avios left for my inbound having spent them all on my outbound. Will the fact I have no avios left be an issue for booking the return and merging the ticket (other than having to pay more in cash)?

Sorry, i am sure this has been asked a million times. I’m new to the process and never done this before.

    Jonny

Are you asking if you can book purely cash tickets for your return, it’s not clear what you want to do?

You could book cash tickets for your return but it’s likely to be very expensive. That booking would remain separate from the outbound one (though that’s not necessarily a problem). You can’t apply a companion voucher to cash tickets.

This feels like a poor use of avios, cash and your companion voucher. A better option would have been to use your avios and voucher for return flights for 2 of you (or 3 if you had enough avios), then booked a cash ticket or BA Holiday for the other person (or people). As it is you’re going to have to spend a lot of money on your return tickets and you’ve only used half the companion voucher.

There are lots of articles and threads here about getting the best value from these.

I’d encourage you to read HFP’s excellent guides on using a 2-4-1 and also to refine your question above

One way tickets are not cheap. You may be better converting you 4 x one way avios into 2 x returns and playing cash for the other two returns.
