Forums Payment cards American Express Can I add cash to temporarily increase my Amex card limit?

  • Durban 34 posts

I’ve just been approved for the BAPP with a £4300 credit limit

I have a large purchase coming up in 2 weeks which will be just over £11,000 and AMEX is accepted and I have the money aside for it

Can I add £7000 cash to my AMEX account and then pay for the lot on the large purchase which will then hit the £10,000 target ?

Another way is to pay £4300, pay that off immediately, then make another installment of £4300, pay immediately , then pay the balance.

It would make it much easier if I could add the cash to the Amex and pay the lot off like that

The first option isn’t possible, but the second is.

    Not always.

Bought a car in my first month of having my Gold card. Amex would only let me spend a certain amount (about twice my limits worth) despite paying the balance off after each transaction.

Had to wait until the next statement month before I could spend on it again despite having available balance.

    This was 2018.

2018! Time to change your car again, me thinks. 😂

Call Amex and ask them if they can approve a higher limit temporarily

Thank you – it has been sorted

I contacted AMEX on their chat. I have another AMEX everyday cashback card with about £12000 limit.

Amex have swapped the 2 cards limits around and given me £12000 on the BAPP card and a lower limit on the everyday cashback card

This is where the charge card comes in handy. No limits

I thought the Amex charge cards have a hidden limit which you can find out by calling Amex to ask them what, theoretically, is the maximum you could spend on the card?

Not sure of the technicalities, was always told there is no limit but yes somewhere there will be an underlining limit where it can lead to a failed transaction.

It tells you the limit in the app, but always much higher than the credit cards. For example I currently have a £60k limit on my Green charge card

Certainly not trying to get around any rules, I just wanted advice as a new person on how I could do what I wanted to.
I explained to Amex exactly what and why I wanted to do it and they understood completely and could not have been more accommodating

It doesn’t matter that you thought you weren’t trying to get around any rules but what AMEX thinks about what you wanted to do.

But you followed the advice given and called Amex which is what is important.
