Discuss today's stories:
I’m looking for ways to meet the SUB spend requirement on my Platinum card and I’m probably going to have to make some purchases that I wouldn’t otherwise do, in order to do so. One option I’m considering is whether I can buy something that’s refundable, trigger the SUB, and then later get a refund.
Would Amex try to reverse the SUB if that refund brought my total spending under the target? I’m guessing they would definitely do so if the refund arrived during the qualifying period, but would they also do so if the refund arrived after the qualifying period?
Can anyone confirm whether statement credits (due to retailer offers) and customer service “adjustments” count against your spend total? Unlike with the BAPP, there’s no counter for the spend target, so the only way I’ve found to track things is to go into transaction history.
I’m intending on holding the Plat for the longer term for the lounge benefits and do hope to take advantage of a retention offer down the line, so I don’t think it’d be much use transferring the MR points out as soon as the bonus posts, and then potentially having a negative MR balance (if such a thing is even possible).
Thanks.
Yes they will remove the SUB if you have a refund which takes you below the target, and you haven’t already moved the points out of your account. If you’ve already moved them, you’ll then have a negative points balance until you’ve spent that amount again. IME statement credits don’t count count against cumulative spend.
Thanks @NorthernLass. Do you know if that still applies even if you get the refund after the qualifying period to earn the SUB has ended?
Don’t think getting a negative MR point balance would be worth it as I want to retain flexibility to transfer into other airlines’ FF schemes and intend to keep the Plat for the long term.
If you really intend on holding the card long term then doing what you mention is not such an issue as you will ultimately/eventually move back into positive points territory…
The refund relates to the original purchase, so if that was made during the SUB period, the SUB would be clawed back as you wouldn’t have spent the minimum amount to trigger it. So the SUB points would be 0 at that point. If you’d already moved them, say, to avios, you would have (e.g.) -60k points on your Amex account. If you were past the SUB period at that point, you’d then need to spend £60k to get back to 0 points!
If you wanted to keep the card then dont do what your thinking. If you dont want the card, you can take the 60k no probs and do the refund, then cancel card. Simple.
As NL says, it’ll be clawed back.
Why not spend / buy something you’ll use in the future?
Energy bills, council tax, supermarket vouchers, gift cards etc.

I would say the same, go to your supermarket of choice and buy enough gift cards to spend over time.
