Cancel Amex gold/ later be added as 2nd cardholder to partner’s account

hi,
a question for the knowledgable souls on this thread…
I’ve had an amex gold rewrds card, been happy with 11 and a bit months of it, got some good points – moved them to my M Bonvoy account earlier this week.
Now I wish to close my Amex goldcredit card prior to the fee- I simply dislike paying a fee for a credit card & am not in need of keeping the basic reward card as points transferred out.
I had referred partner to open their own Amex gold rewards card last month; that has been opened & we both benefitted with referral/reward points.

Am now curious & could not see this has been asked on other forum posts – if i cancel my Amex Gold rewrdscredit card now, in a few months can I be added as a second cardholder to partners credit card account..thus they’ll get referral points?

You don’t get referral points or SUBs for supplementary cards – IIRC there might be a 3k MR bonus for adding a first supp to a gold card but don’t hold me to that!

Actually this was asked the other day (albeit in relation to the BAPP) 😂

I just got an Additional card for my wife and got 3,000 + extra 3,000 on pomotion.

Most of the cards have a bonus for adding the first supp, apply via this page:

But OP was specifically asking about the gold card. I couldn’t remember exactly how many bonus MR points it gets you (as opposed to referral or SUB points).

Thank you @SteveJ; it’s always useful when people produce the actual answer rather than some ramblings.

I think it’s worth adding that if the main cardholder is happy to wait for a week or two after getting their card, they are quite likely to get an extra bonus offer for adding a supp, as @mark2 did above.

hi all- thank you very much for quick responses –
partner has now received an offer to add a supplementary cardholder with bonus points offer- I was unsure, if once I cancelled my card, would I be viewed as a ‘valid’ contender for a supplementary card, given i had held my own card & account previously.

all i could see in regards bonus for partner adding me was that they could not have benefitted from the bonus for adding a supplementary person if they had done so before – they have not, so this may work.. priority is to close my account, will then wait a few weeks as their bonus offer ends early March & give it a shot .

Whether you’ve held any Amex or not, for how long or how long ago doesn’t matter for the supplementary card bonus offer. You can proceed now, no need to wait.
