I’m booking flights to Italy in economy but the return flight time isn’t great. There’s a later flight that day but only one economy seat left ( this is for Naples in September).

I’m looking for advice to ensure the lowest change fees possible.

If I book the return flight for two people but the later flight has an extra seat come available, what’s the change fee? Is it still meant to be £35 per person unless the taxes or charges are less than this and then there’s £0 change fee?

In which case I may have to go for the higher Avios lower cash option which isn’t as good a deal but ensure I cap my fees at £34 or below?

If I book the later return seat too as ones available now, hoping the other becomes available, will BA let me as I’ll be booked to fly out from the same airport earlier in the day? Again I’d need to ensure £34 or lower fees on that booking too in case I need to cancel it?

Either way, the outbound leg will not be cancelled so I just need to be sure exactly what to do here, or is it best I just book each leg separately as one way tickets for each of us? That way it’s easier to cap the fee each way and makes it less confusing. As I’m not sure if the change fee is halved if you only amend one leg.

I would go for separate bookings here so you can pounce if more seats become available. BA.com is currently charging only 50pp to cancel short-haul flights, but if course this could change at any time so it depends how much risk you want to take.

Great, thank you. I’ll book the outbound flights separately then as those won’t change and I may chance the lowest Avios highest cash price for the return flights.

Do economy redemption flights on BA include hold luggage up to 23kg? Or just carry on luggage?

23 kg hold luggage plus a generous hand baggage allowance. If you don’t pack light or want to go shopping it’s tremendous value. We brought a ton of F & B back from Spain last month!
