I’ve just tried a “dummy cancellation” of an avios booking and got this as part of the Ts and Cs:
“Requesting a refund will cancel all the flights listed above for all the passengers in the booking.
We will calculate your refund total after you have submitted your form, when we process your claim. The refund amount will be based on our terms and conditions and is final and non-negotiable. Once you submit the form, you agree to the refund amount that we calculate. Under normal circumstances your refund will be processed within 7 working days of form submission, but please be aware that it may take up to two billing cycles before appearing on your credit card statement.”
I’m sure previously you got a figure for the cash element you were getting back. This seems to be the final page so I am wary of pressing the button in case BA intends to keep my 4 figure surcharges! Has anyone else seen this? I also cancelled a RFS recently and there’s no sign of the 3 x £15 I was expecting back.
I cancelled an avios flight last week and clicked through. The avios were not returned within 20 mins but I needed to make another avios booking desperately. Rang BA and avios were deposited immediately. Told refund was all payment minus £35. Told up to 25 days refund (6 days in and no refund thus far).
Thanks @ATP – problem is I would absolutely not rely on anything BA CS told me as trying to get that money back if it’s not now covered by the Ts and Cs would be virtually impossible. It might just be clumsily worded but then again, this is BA!
This bit sounds downright sinister if you ask me:
***Once you submit the form, you agree to the refund amount that we calculate*** with no indication as to what that sum might be!
I got this when I cancelled an Avios booking about 8 days ago. Have made a note to chase on Wednesday.
Interestingly, I cancelled my GCM flight that they had moved (swayed by the now criminal prices of accommodation on the island given GBP’s drubbing). The miles were returned straight away and the taxes/fees within 48hrs.
But if your original flight was cancelled, you would have been entitled to a full refund anyway, it wouldn’t have just been you changing your mind (which has been allowed for £35 pp up till now). Did you get any kind of message about what would be refunded in your case when you submitted the cancellation form?
Definitely criminal – fortunately we have timeshare weeks and hotel points to use so we may not be able to afford to eat but we’ll be comfortable!
Sorry – I wasn’t clear. The GCM flight (Avios) gave me a full refund. When I cancelled it, I was shown I would get 137.5k (I think) Avios back and £1600. No £35 pp fees.
The short haul (also Avios) gave me the same non-explanation you noted that BA would arbitrarily decide how much money I would get back and that was the end of the matter. I’m assuming I take the £35 pp hit and get the full miles back.
So that’s definitely different from what I’m being shown. This really needs clarifying by BA!
I cancelled a short haul RFS and don’t seem to have got any cash back. It would only have been £45 so it’s not the end of the world but this could be a worrying turn of events!
