Can I do this via chat and then pay back what is owed within a few days or so? Or are they adamant its ‘pay it off then cancel’?
Its fine, if you have an outstanding balance you will just get a statement as usual requesting payment. In fact, if you’re expecting a partial fee refund, it’s a lot simpler to have a balance which is more than that so you’re not having to get it refunded by another method.
Cancelling the card doesn’t cancel the credit agreement you signed when you took the card out.
As long as you’re maintaining your contractually agreed minimum payment, Amex (or any other credit card provider) is in no position to insist on any balance being repaid.
