Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Companion voucher i knew nothing about!

  • 16 posts

    Hey all,
Me and my wife have the AMEX BA blue card, getting us two different 2 for 1 flights a year. We were saving her points for maybe japan or South America.

Anyway, looking in her account, turns out she has a companion voucher i knew nothing about!
So, any help from the pros would be most appreciated, it expires in august and i dont want it to go to waste.
Could we do a long weekend without using points, but using cash. And how do i find out roughly how much cash id have to add to use the voucher without points?
We’re thinking Florence, Athens (as these are typically pricey to get to) or Iceland.

Don’t forget the do nothing option, especially if you’re forcing a less than ideal trip.

Can you use the companion voucher without using Avios?

I agree with Aston and not using the voucher just because you have one.

Doing nothing is an option for sure. However we dont mind a weekend away at all so im trying to view it as a oppourtunity we have the voucher @aston100

Rui, not sure. Hope so! Hoping an expect here is in the know.

I was 99% sure you couldn’t, but BA Flyer already confirmed that you can’t.

As others have said go somewhere you really want to. You can do a dummy booking and then see what Avios / Cash combinations are offered using the voucher so hopefully there will be something that works. If you need to top up Avios you could look at buying or boosting to get what you need.

You know that the 241 from the blue Amex can only be used for economy flights, I presume?

You can certainly use a voucher for a weekend break but you will need to part with some avios. This can be good value, for example over a bank holiday when cash prices are high (I’ve just used avios to book MAN-LHR-TLS one-way where cash price on the departure times I wanted was about £200).

If starting in London you can get to destinations like France and parts of central and Eastern Europe for 4-5000 avios plus £17.50 cash each way. There are higher and lower avios options available which might suit you as well. You’ll see these once you start making a reward booking.

Florence from LCY would be a fun weekend away, I imagine, but I think would be in a higher avios price band.

You don’t say how many Avios you have already. If you’re saving for Japan (and given cash prices even for economy can reach £1.3k+ easily at peak periods), you may want to revisit option to do nothing, especially if you have a low number of Avios.

Buy the points via boost. That way you are preserving your stash. 0.92p with your 241 voucher equates to 0.46p per point so avery good value redemption.
